The provincial Liberal . . government, shortly after being elected in 2001, made spending and huge staff - reductions to, government ministries, | : resulting i in an extensive re- duction in services to British -Columbians and communi- ties. Small rural communities were particularly hard. hit with the loss: of many ser- vices, along with long term . stable jobs. . Court. houses, correction facilities such as the one in Terrace were closed or con- ; solidated into larger com- munities. _ The inconvenience to ‘ many residents of the prov- ‘ ince has been extensive-and ~| ‘ unnecessary. ‘ Much of the windfall money that the province has received through taxes and © royalties has been as a result of low interest rates spur- ring a booming construc- tion industry on the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Okanagan Valley and high commodity prices for natural resources. Much of this money ° should have been directed” back to important programs ~ and ministries that are starv- ing for staff and larger bud- gets to provide us with the ‘services that most of us want or in fact often need. Our next provincial gov- — ernment should enact legis- lation preventing the gov-’ | erning party from spending public money as an election goody as - means to attract,” ~ votes. , Such legislation. should ° make it illegal to make com- mitments or promises aimed at. attracting votes within three months of a ‘provincial election. We all want the province to contribute to new commu- nity centers, arenas, commu- nity infrastructure programs, libraries and so on. But this should be carried out through normal budget: : _ allocations and commit-- ments. , - Jim Culp, | Terrace, B.C. www.hawkatr.ca Call your local travel agent cuts ° We’re not lemmings CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD © The Mail Bag in- profits than community well being. ‘This fits well with the Liberal agenda of allow- ing corporations to export power, raw logs and other commodities ‘without en- suring communities ben- efit by getting the maximum jobs from publicly owned resources.
