Winter Games we’ve heard a lot about the dedication and exper- tise of local organizers, but what about similar traits in the athletes? Particularly those travel-weary, out-of-town contestants who gave it their all. At the Terrace Review we were fortunate enough to meet three young Masset swimmers, primarily because they took up residence in our board room for the weekend. The 11-year-old Masset Eagles ’ Swim Team members Mark Hill, Berke Lott and Ryan Verge are proof that Winter Games athletes are a hardy lot. For example, consider the trauma of travel even before the competi- tion begins. Our young trio left home at 8 a.m. Thursday, medals and: the adventure of travel fore- most in their minds. The ferry was to leave for the mainiand at 10:30 - ara. and they boarded that ferry in plenty of time... unaware of the long wait ahead. Seas were heavy, the ferry delayed, and regular weather reports every two hours showed little promise of change. They waited through lunch and the after- noon. Their patience was rewarded at 5:30 p.m. when they were told the seas had calmed and the jour- ney was about to begin. If the seas were calmed, though, everyone on board was happy they hadn’t witnessed Nature’s chaos earlier in the day. This would be a voyage to remember. "The ferry ride was like... Big waves,” Berke’s eyes roll as he remembers. “They came right over the front,” Mark adds. "... And slapped against the windows," Berke finishes the nearly complete sentence. Is this teamwork or what? And just how rough was it? "If you tried to walk you would end up flying into a wall," says Mark. "Try to sit on a seat and you would just go sideways," says Berke. The solution? Everyone picked a spot in the centre of the passenger deck and lay on the floor; there was less apparent movement there, we're told. Little comfort for Ryan, though. “Ryan threw up twice," tattled Mark. Still, the vessel didn’t founder and the Masset Eagles team and equipment arrived in Prince Rupert at midnight. After a relatively calm bus ride, they arrived at the Games Control Centre in Terrace at 2 a.m. and our trio was nibbling cookies and sipping ‘milk at the Terrace Review by 3 a.m. With only about four hours sleep, the boys were up at 7 a.m. Friday and ready for the challenge of the games. And challenge they did. In their division, Mark went home with a bronze in the 200 fly and Ryan captured a bronze in the 200 breaststroke. And Berke, well, he didn’t get a medal but he did do his team proud. The boys did some team work in leaving behind a few memories of their own. If you're still recovering from the horror of seeing a human hand slammed in a car door or an arm mutilated by some piece of machinery during the Games weekend, you have this venture- some trio to blame. The arm wasn’t real, though. It was a stuffed novelty the boys picked up at a local store. We can score one extra point for the Masset Eagles, and the memories we shared at the’ games, The Winter Games experience
