V8V 1X4 = Hazelton | mill study: we could be next The Kitimat-Stikine Regional ‘District, has offered moral sup- port for recommendations re- sulting from a study of the potential value of the Rim sawill - site in Hazelton. These recom- mendations call for a second development study to investigate the feasibility of using the site as . a forest industry industrial park. - In a letter to the regional district, Hazelton Mayor Alice Maitland outlined a proposal in which Westar Timber would be offered $1 for the purchase of ‘the site in exchange for good- will, tax write-offs and a more diversified market. Maitland al- so suggested that if their pro- posal were to become a reality, ; «application would be made to a the North Coast Minister of State for $150,000 to help take “care of initial site maintenance, a detailed site development study, and site promotion, . According to Maitland, the feasibility study of the ‘Rim Forestry Development Park’ will explore the idea of operat- ing the site as a central primary sawmill for a number of smaller secondary manufacturing indus- tries in the area. This concept could be of in- terest to some Terrace business- es in the event West Fraser Mills decides to relocate to Kitimat. Regional district director Les Watmough says that there are similarities in the situation of both mills — the first similarity being that it isn’t necessary for either mill to be shut down, Ac- cording to Watmough, there’s enough timber in the area to keep at least one shift running even if West Fraser decides to - build a new mill near Kitimat. If they do shut the mill down, however, he says there are a number of possibilities that would save local jobs, and one of those possibilities is exactly what is being proposed in Hazel- ton. , He says the West Fraser mill has a dry kiln, an idea necessary to secondary manufacturing which has been discussed for many years, and the operation could be used to provide both primary and secondary wood products. ; .
