Wrinch, M.P.P. for Skeena, to establish a milk distribution depot at Prince Rupert. The matter has now have made plans to increase their herds and others have decided to keep their cows instead of dis- posing of them as they had, until recently, decided to do. The matter of milk distribution, from Prince Rupert is one which cannot longer be fooled with. The Provincial Government, and even the Dominion Government through the Soldier Settlement Board, are bound to protect the producers of milk. Led by the Omineca Herald, both govern- ments have advocated the North- ern or, a8 some choose to call it, Central British Columbia, as a dairying district. Many years have been spent: in convineing the farmers and finally inducing them to switch from beef cattle and timothy hay to dairy cattle and fodder crops. In early days beef and timothy were very pro- fitable, but the market for these to such an extent that they are both a losing game. Due to propaganda of the governments, through their agents or employ- ees, the policy of the Omineca Herald has been adopted by many farmers and more farmers are joining the ranks every year, and now milk is one of the chief pro- duets cf theinterior country. In another year or two milk can be made the chief product. government established. a cream- ery at Vanderhoof and rade the thistake of permitting it to pass into the hands of lucal men sev- eral years too soon. The result has been failure of the-creamery 4 and financial embarrassment for many farmers, far and near,.- A government will make -nistakes, present government, except to the extent that-the creamery was wrongly located to begin with. + What we are interested in now, ' as at all times for the last fifteen. ducts). of the Skeena,. Some vears ago the provincial Rupert distribution scheme. farm produce that can be pto- ‘duced between the Coast and the ‘Lakes country. But there must be a central - distributing point, with a “trained, capable man in| control of that distributing point, and the Proviiicial Government is in-dutv bound to provide ‘the distribution depot, and to main- tain it until such time as the pro- ducers are able to ‘finance and manage it. The Provincial Government madé mistakes at Vanderhoof, and the farmer has had to pay’ for them. Let that go, but pro- fit by it. Vanderloof was no place for a creamery, as it had no market. The establishment was turned. over to the local people before they were capable of handling it. These -mistakes should not be allowed to occur again, and we do not believe the government will permit them to oecur again. But a far greater mistake can be made if the government does not provide an outlet for the in- creasing: milk .production of the great interior, for which milk production the government. is responsible. The farmers are now facing the problem of con- tinuing in the milk business, and at Rupert is established,” of re- verting to beef and timothy hay and utter ruination, or of getting out of the country and leaving years of labor behind for the gavernment to consider at leisure. It has cost many of the leading milk producers a good deal of money and years of labor to switch from beef cattle to dairy eattle, Very few, if any, can stand the strain of switching ‘back. These who could afford the loss will not take it, but: will leave their farms and go else- where, Besides those who are now on the land and producing milk, to invest who will, and -are pre- pared to go into the dairy busi- ness as soon as there ig a market for the milk. But that money will be lost to British Columbia if the goyernment does not move more quickly. ; There is no reason why the roilk depot should not be ready for business at Prince Rupert by the time the daily train service is inaugurated, Mav 8, Long delays are the most harmful features of the government. Maybe 1t is good polities, but it is rotten ‘business. Dr. Wrineh started the Prince He is a supporter-of the government and, better than that, he knows what he is talking: about.
