A carol for Terrace

_ Twas the week before Christmas in Terrace, they. say,
" When the bad weather nearly scared Santa away, _

The children had played in the cold snowy fluff,

. They'd skated and sledded and rolled in the stuff.
‘The parents were shopping for bargains and deals,
For Barbies, Nintendo, Construx and Hot Wheels.

The schools had their concerts, with singing and humming,

_ The teachers were grateful for holidays coming.

‘While Grandmas were baking with chocolate and fruit, -

~ The little kids dreamed of the holiday loot.
The cold wind began at the edge of Thornhill,
It blew. through the town and around the sawmill,
It raced down Lakelse and it turned onto Park,

It knocked down the lamp posts and left Davis dark.
The wind. ‘raged up Lanfear and through Halliwell,

7 ‘Went down Kalum Street, onto Lazelle, wee
~The Terrace wind blew with a harsh icy hiss, —

_:, The people were crying, “Rain, snow, and now THIS?”

-. Some hid in their houses, away from the cold,

” But nothing was safe when this Terrace wind rolled.
~The snow scattered everywhere, blizzards for miles,’

-. A few kids were lost in the-seven-foot piles.

2 /The- crews were out plowing, snow high as the trees,

~: But soon had to stop as equipment would freeze,
...The cold Terrace residents fled from the storm,
They huddled together inside to stay warm.
No people-peeked out of their homes anymore,

. “Qne man got frostbite through a crack in his door.
_ All Terrace was silent, a frozen ghost town,

~~". STil seven days later when Santa came down.
fo “*What’s happened to Terrace?” he said to his elves. -
“These cold Northern folks have all hidden themselves!”
~ He dropped all the presents down chimneys and fled,

- As his sleigh flew away he was shaking his head.
‘‘Now why do these Terracites stay here?’’ he said.

- , ‘Why don’t they move south to Vancouver instead?”

-* From a chimney in Thornhill, a voice gave a shout,

. *4We dike it here, Santa Claus, once we thaw out.”
~.. *It’s a wonderful place,” the voice went on to say.

. “The smartest ones just hibernate until May!”
. Saint Nicholas said, as he flew out of sight,
. “Merry Christmas to ail, and to all a good night!

: And because of this-weather, created to scare us, _

The Community Carol Sing held at the R.E.M. Lee Theatre earlier this month was a joyous
_affair for about 400 focal residents. Even the younger members of the crowd, who at times

appeared to be overwhelmed by the occasion, regained thelr enthusiasm with some of the

more popular tunes. All groups were accumpanied by planist Loretta Lepp.
