Drainage, size of project make the choice complex FARMER’s market organizers are pressing city council for a decision on where it will put a planned $240,000 skateboard park, About 20 members of the market asso- ciation crowded into council chambers Monday night to push for action. They also presented a 911-name peti- tion urging the city not to move the farmer’s market io make room for a skateboard park. “We would like to know what is going to happen,” said John Vink, adding the market needs to plan for the coming season. Mayor Jack Talstra told the group that city staff is still considering several loca- tions, and said he expects council will make a final decision by the end of the month. “Council is determined to provide a skateboard park for these young people and we're determined to do it this calen- A2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 11, 1998 City pushed for decision on skateboard park site dar year and we hope to have it in place by summer,” he said, The city has looked hard at the idea of moving the market to a gravel lot adja- cent to Riverside Park, and placing the skateboard park in the present Davis Ave. site of the market, One problem in locating the skate- board park is drainage, Because it’s basi- cally a big concrete dish it will act like a giant rain catch basin, meaning some kind of drain is required. But there’s no storm sewer on Davis Ave., says city planner David Trawin, which means added complications and expense if the idea of using the market site is chosen. Parks and recreation superintendent Steve Scott says they’re also looking at land between Riverside Park land and the curling club, and a couple of sites around the arena hill. One of those would be putting it on the part of the arena parking lot that over- looks the tennis courts. Another option is cutting into the hill at the bottom, in the same fashion as the tennis courts. And another possibility would see city-owned land behind the courthouse used. would be ideal — if the skateboard park could be developed at the same time as a suggested multiplex. But going ahead with the skateboard park first could limit the options of building the multiplex later, People who think the skateboard park will be small and could be tucked away somewhere are wrong, he adds It’s to be 10,000 square feet ~ 85 feet by 120 feet - which means it’s as wide as the ice sheet at the arena and almost two thirds as long. Plus the organizing com- mittee is talking about having picnic tables around the skating surface, which would further increase the size. Regardless of what happens with the skateboard park, Talstra warned market organizers they may not be allowed to use the city-owned plot of land perma- nently, particularly if the market contin- ues to prow, ‘““You’ve been there 15 years,” he said. “T'm not sure if you can be there forever. Picture the town in 20 years. That’s a prime piece of real estate.” Lynne Christiansen said a consistent location over the last 15 years is the sin- gle biggest factor that’s made the market But Scott said some of those sites STOP Press Police inspector leaving TERRACE’S HEAD RCMP officer is leaving Terrace for a posting in Prince George. Distribution has been going on for six months but the results have to be reviewed. School district secretary-treasurer Barry Piersodorff said Hazelton is an exception because access to condoms is more limited than here. Terrace counsellors say students haven’t brought up con- dom availability as an issue. And those interviewed didn’t want to comment on whether condoms should be available from counsellors or in school washrooms, They did say students had access to condoms in hotel and gas station washrooms and from Planned Parenthood. Caledonia’s student council president Alan Austin said the issue has never come up with student council. It does plan to survey students on other issues and a questions of condoms will probably be added.
