As Summer curator for the
Centennial Museum, I shall be
writing in the Herald each
week, keeping you, the public,
informed of our displays and
activities.

To assist me at the museum,
Miss Lucy Trigo has been
appointed and we will be
pleased to welcome any -
visitors.

Our latest item on display is a
very early hand crank washing
machine. We have no record of
its date of origin or who donated
this fine piece...if any reader
could identify or supply further
information regarding the
machine, we would be pleased
to hear from you.

MUSEUM NOTES

- Many people might be
surprised to learn that the Nass
River once flowed <auth down
the Kalum Valley to join the
Skeena at Terrace. Both rivers
then flowed south to empty into
the sea in the Douglas Channel
at Kitimat.

This large river system
accounts for the 100 mile long
valley that extends from
Aiyansh to Kitimat.

Bids open
for
storm sewer

Mayor Vic Jolliffe reported
that bids were opened July 9 for
the Storm Sewer Project which
is intended to alleviate storm
drainage problems in the
downtown area of Terrace and
provide a main outflow for
sutface drainage into the
Skeena River.

The successful bidder was
Interior Contractors of
Penticton with a bid of
$363,044.25 Other bidders wer
were G.L. Lendingham oi
Vancouver with a bid of
$425,661.40 and G.W. Scott &
Sons of Kitimat with a bid of
$507 286.36.

Professional consulting and
engineering fees must be added
to the contractors’ bid price in
the approximate amount of
$25,000.00,

The low bid of Interior
Contractors is considerably less
than the low interest loan that
wehave obtained from Federal-
Provincial funds in the amount
of $500,000.00 and Council will be
now asked to consider
extending this drainage scheme
with the surplus monies left
over from the low bid-

Also one bid was received for
local read paving from L.G.
Scott & Sons for $81,360.50
Council will be asked to ratify
the awarding of the contracts at
next Monday night’s meeting
and work should then proceed
immediately. ,

Stamp collecting, as many
enthusiasts have been pleased -
to discover, is just one aspect of
philately as a hobby. Others,
like postmark collecting, can
prove equally rewarding and
present little difficulty in
aquiring high-quality examples
at modest cost.

So much an important part of
philately has postmark
collecting become that il is
worthwhile taking a look at the
way it has grown over the past

110 years and how the British -

Post Office is helping the
worldwide army of postmarks
enthusiasts. in

In Britain special event
marks are applied by hand to
mail posted at exhibitions and
conferences where the Post.
Office provides special posting
boxes. Slogan postmarks are
machine stamped on envelopes
posted in ordinary letter boxes
and are used to publicise local
amenities; Government
projects or events of local or
national significance. ©

In 1990 the golden jubilee of
Uniform Penny Postage was
celebrated by two exhibitions
and, both used = special
postmarks with decorative,
Pictorial postmarks. Pictorial
postmarks were not used again
until the Second World War.
