1-405 ANNUAL MEETING Ciwa The shocking depletion of wildlife in the East Kootenay game reserves was bitterly condemned by the- delegates attending the 7th Annual Delegated Conference of Lo- cal 1-405 IWA, July 30-31, in Cranbrook. The delegates approved a resolution which requested the Provincial Government to close the present game re- serves to hunters immediate- ly. They also instructed the Local’s Financial Secretary to lodge a strong protest with the Provincial Government for allowing the wholesale slaughter of game reserve animals. The two-day meeting held in the Legion Hall also dealt with 59 other resolutions, ap- proved the Officers’ and Fi- nancial Reports, conducted nominations for Local officers, elected a New Regional Board Member, heard from a num- ber of guest speakers, and elected delegates to the Re- gional, B.C. Federation of La- bour and New Democratic Party conventions. ’ All the officers were re- turned to office with the ex- ception of Financial Secretary Elmer Atwood who is op- posed by Carl Johnson, a Tal- lyman at the Kootenay Forest Products operation in Nelson. Their names will go out on a réferendum ballot to the membership. Officers re-elected were Art Damstrom, President; Jack. Munro, Ist Vice-President; L. Johnson, 2nd Vice-President; C. He suggested that more unionists should take an interest in politics as a means of protecting their job security. He pointed out that if all workers were to support pro- labour candidates in all areas of politics there would be no need to fear the employer or worry about adverse legisla- tion. Regional President Jack Moore spoke on the recent Coast settlement and the ef- fects it will have on next year’s Interior negotiations. He told the delegates that the Union must utilize the time between now and negotiations in building up the member- ship. As in Prince George the previous week, he emphasized the need for the Interior Lo- cals to plan their negotiations strategy. He stated that the full resources of the Union would be available to them and the objective was to have one contract covering IWA workers in British Columbia. One of the resolutions ANDY SMITH Regional Safety Director ot Sy BL oe oa THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER which drew a good deal of in- terest from the delegates dealt with the 1963 Interna- tional Convention action which deprived Local Unions the right to retain the roll call at delegated annual meetings. Following a lengthy debate, the delegates amended the original resolution which called for the next Interna- tional Convention to re-insti- tute the roll call vote and in- stead instructed the Local of- ficers to submit a comprehen- sive report on the subject for study by the Local’s 1967 Conference. The Conference also ap- proved a resolution which called for the Strike Directive to be amended so that in the event of a strike in the Inter- ior, married strikers would receive $36.00 per week, single strikers $27.00 per week, and each dependent $3.00 per week. Included among the. im- portant resolutions were de- mands that: e The Local Executive Board institute a Death Bene- fit Plan providing $100 pay- able on a member’s death to his beneficiary. © The Provincial Govern- ment implement a Provincial Insurance Plan similar to the Saskatchewan Plan. e The results of balloting on, negotiations in the South- ern Interior be published in the “Lumber Worker.” e Each year three Shop Stewards’ schools be held in the Local Union, the location to be decided on by the Local Executive Board.
