MAR 2 5 1974 TO: Mayor and Aldermen DATE: March 22, 1974 FROM: R.A. Freeman, City Clerk RE: Student Employment Programs We have recently been advised of two student summer employment programs offered by the Provincial Government. Both come under the general heading of the "Careers 74" program and are as follows: 1, SWEEP 74 ~ "Students Working in an Environmental Enhancement Program" will reimburse participating municipalities $400.00 per month per student employed; a total of $800.00 per student for a two month period commencing July 2, 1974 and municipalities are asked to assume costs of any employee benefits and administration. The allocation of this program has been made by Regional District and there are apparently 1,490 positions assigned to the G.V.R.D. of which we are entitled to an undetermined share, The information on this program was contained in a Jetter from the Minister of Labour, Honourable W.S. King, dated March 15, 1974 and the letter states that a further letter of explanation and application forms will be forwarded within two weeks and that completed applications must be submitted for receipt by May 13, 1974. STEP 74 - "Student Temporary Employment Program". In this program the Provincial Government will reimburse student salaries between $400.00 and $500.00 per month (depending on the educational, qualifications of the students employed) plus 15% administrative costs. We were advised of this program by the Greater Vancouver Regicnal District and they have allocated nine students to us out of the 517 assigned to the G.V.R.D. We have the application forms for this project and Mr. G.W. Carlisle, Director of Finance and Administration of the G.V.R.D. advises that the deadline for submitting applications is April 5, 1974 although he does hold out the possibility of getting a few days extension of this time.
