He joined his father, Bernard Leach, at the St. Ivee Pottery in 1930 aa an apprentice. At that time, very little technical in- formation was avatilable to the atudio crafteperson, so David went off to Stoke-on-Trent to study industrial technology and pottery ectence for two years. Father and gon worked aa a team for the next 26 wears, developing the reputation of St. Ivee for producing high quality domestic ware. David's skills as a technician and Bernard's creative artietry combined to enhance the pottery's auccess. In 1956 David left St. Ives to establish hia oum "Lowerdown Pottery" in Devon. He realised that he must go off independantly to develop the artistic side of himself. "It ia diffieult for othere to appreciate the strength of my father's influence - a good ene but an overpowering one." With limited resourcea available while building a new studio, he concentrated on low fire electric slipware for 6 years and then switched abruptly to stoneware and porcelain on completion of hia high fire gas kiln. Apprentices and atudenta were always a part of hie studio. He aleo taught at Art Colleges throughout England. In 1966 he held his firet major one-man show. Since then hts talents and achievementa have been acknowledged throughout the world with exhibitions, awards and medals. We have been fortunate in the last few yeare to have been viatted by Michael Cardew and Harry Davis - and now, David Leach.
