All the big crowd-pleasing events of past years are back — the wet and wild log burling competi- tion, the chokerman’s race and the obstacle log bucking competition. Those, notes Terrace Downtown Lions rep and Logger Sports organizer Dave Maroney, are all events-in Which there’s some potential for the con- tesiants to fall, usually into a pond of water. “The crowd loves that,”? Maroney noted. If those events go over big, there’s one new one coming this year that locals will not want to miss. Tree climbing is an event that dates back to the early days of logging and is a skill that is in decline these days. ; Loggers equipped with cork boots, harncsses and a large belt and spurs they sling around the pole quickly ascend to the top, ting a bell and then vir- tually free-fall back down the pole, hopefully without snagging their undercarriage on the way down. The best time wins. “We used to have a competitor by the name of Danny Sailor who would throw his bat up at the top of the tree and beat it down,’” Maroney added. Novice events include the underhand log chop, power saw bucking, axe throwing, single hand bucking, the chokerman’s race, and obstacle pole bucking. All of the events, including the novice categories, pay prize money for the top three or four finishers. Payouts range from $50 to $150 and grand prizes for total points include power saws. Maroney says the prize total for this year will top $7,000 in cash and equipment. Another popular event is the axe-throwing com- petition, and it will once again be a Canadian Championship event, ensuring a high level of com- petition. Terrace’s Logger Sports is one stop on the Cana- dian Logger Sports Association circuit. That’s what brings pros in from as far away as New Zealand some years. ‘We should have a good turnout,’ Maroney predicted, One of the factors affecting the turmout may be that there are no Logger Sports at the PNE in Van- couver this year. In the past many of the top provincial competitors broke away in the middle of the PNE, drove all night to get to Terrace, competed, and then drove all night to get back to Vancouver. With no competing event the same weekend, more big names could well be here, says Maroncy.
