Radio station pulls plug
after complaint received

SUPPORT IS growing for a plan by a local radio sta-
tion to carry a signal from a Vancouver FM outlet.

CFNR, owned by the Northern Native Broadcasting
Society and broadcasting to more than 50 locations
around the north and interior, began bringing in the
Vancouver classic rock station CFMI from 6 p.m. to
6 a.m. two weeks ago.

The new signal replaced one from an Edmonton
country and western station.

But CFNR pulled the plug when another local out-
let, Skeena Broadcasters, complained to the Canadian
Radio-television Telecommunications Commission
(CRTC).

CFNR’s licence from the CRTC doesn’t include
permission to carry CFMI.

But now CFNR general manager Clarence Martin is
asking for a licence amendment.

‘<All we’re trying to do is offer another sort of pro-
gramming,’’ said Martin. ‘“We don’t want to be a
threat to anyone.”’

CFNR was founded 12 years ago as one of a group
of aboriginal radio stations across the country.

Its FM broadcasts originate from offices at Kitselas
and it maintains satetlite-fed repeaters throughout the
north.

CFNR broadcasts its own programming between 6
am. and 6 p.m. and has added new features recently
to attract more advertisers and to broaden its listener-
ship.

Adding CFMI merely continued that effort, said sta-
tion manager Martin.

He’s been surprised by the phone calls and letters of

support received since removing the CFMI signal be-
cause of the complaint.

“‘It gave our staff a boost in morale to kno people

were listening and that they cared,’* said Martin.

One of those listeners, Aurell Collette, has been dis-
tributing a petition around town.

**T thought it was the greatest idea they ever had,”’
he said of the CFMI night time programming. “It
gave the middle age people a chance to listen to their
music again on the radio. You can listen 1o kids rap
or country and westem on other stations.”’ ;

Collette also enjoys the CFNR’s day time offerings,
saying one radio station shouldn’t have a monopoly.

As with Martin, Collette said he was surprised by
the amount of support his petition is gathering.

“‘I knew my friends listened to 92.1 FM (CFNR)
but didn’t know so many other people did.”

Georgilas’ preliminary application was approved by the |
provincial government earlier this summer, meaning his’

business was cleared on a security check.

The basement of the Terrace Inn is one option for a loca-:
tion, but Georgilas says that might change. ‘‘This is whatI

have to decide — I have to study the industry better,”’ he
said about finding a location for a charity casino.

The government set a limit of 30 gaming tables and up to
300 slot machines for charity casinos. The betting limit is
also set at a $500 maximum for all card games. The pro-
vince has also increased casino hours from noon. to 2 a.m.

The province hasn’t set Jimits on the number of casinos
itll approve, but Nov. 28 is the proposal deadline.
