§HOULD the reported desire of the Doukhobor Sons of Free- dom sect materialize, and they re- turn to Russia, the land of their Origin, a long-standing ‘‘problem’’ Will be solved, but not to Canada’s Credit. ~*~ When the first Doukhobor ‘inv Migrants landed in this country Over 60 years ago, aided by the British Labor party and great his- torical figures like Leo Tolstoy and 2eorge Bernard Shaw, they came a refugees from cruel Tzarist per- secution. _ The Canadian government of the day welcomed them as indus _ tious and God-fearing people, and _ ave them many assurances of free- doms which have long since been etrayed by successive govern: Ments. Under social- ism the family unit is fostered, pro- tected and preserved. The well- being of children is paramount, and parential love for their offspring is not trampled upon as in B.C, under a Social Credit government. We do not give blanket approval to all the sectarian extremes of the Doukhobor Sons of Freedom. Nei ther do we regard the outrage of robbing them of their children as a ‘‘solution’’ to good citizenship. What is already becoming well understood is the, diabolical glee of speculators in the East Kootenays, who see in the projected Doukho- bor migration to the USSR a new opportunity for a gigantic land steal. Having robbed them of their children we can now look forward to seing them robbed of the. last of the lands they made fertile. If, as and when these Doukho* bors begin their migration to the Soviet Union, the event will be one in which Canadians will have no cause to be proud. For us it will mark the finale of an historic failure. PAGE : x os Comment What have you done to ensure that spring will always be a time of life and laughter for her . and all children? Send your personal protest against continued H-tests to the department of external affairs today. Tom McEwen, (With apologies to Reuben Ship, author of the famed CBC play, The Investigator). Two of the world’s oldest monarchies were thrown into a state of acute crisis last week. Senator Joseph -R. McCarthy (Republican, Wisconsin) had ar- rived quite unexpectedly at ‘the border” with a subversive liver. The turmoil in immigration of- fices was reminiscent of a. pro- gressive Canadian trade union- ist trying to get into the United States to attend a convention of his union! ‘Down There,” Mephistocles declared a state of emergency, called out the palace guard, doubled the security forces, put on additional stokers and con- fined all the noted philosophers in his. custody to temporary house arrest until the crisis sub- sided, As an extra precautionary measure Mephistotles had spe- cial radar equipment installed at the landing stage of the “down only” elevator, just to make sure no prospeative immigrant ar- rived. unheralded. Disturbed over the possibility of Senator McCarthy’s reception ‘Up There,” Mephistocles was taking all precautions against the risk of having any McCarthy Un- Hell Activities Committee in his domain. The very thought of such an eventuallity sent shivers down his spine despite the high temperature of his heating instal- lations. xt es “Up There,” the veteran gate- keeper St. Peter was also deeply disturbed. From long experience St. Peter knew iti wasn’t eaSy to give a highly recommended U.S. senator ‘the gate” without some very valid reasons. One hadj to be diplomatic in these matters. The venerable Saint paced to and fro in his brilliantly illuminated lodge, twirling his golden keys and pondering deeply, what to do? ; Behind the closed door of the adjoining waiting room St. Peter could hear the senator from Wis- consin berating the immigration officers and demanding an audi- ence with~the Chief. “‘What’n hell’s the holdup?” the senator was barking, “Don’t you know who I am? ‘This. dump needs cleaning up.” 2 Until that moment things had been very tranquil in Heaven. Peace reigned supreme. The an- gels twanged on their golden harps, filling the ethereal vac- uum with melodius notes. Cher- ubs flitted around like flights of . beautiful birds. The saints kept busy with their heavenly medi- tations and discourses, and all around was peaceful serenity. Now this had to happen. One might as well admit Mephistocles into Heaven as a permanent resi- dent. In fact, thought St. Peter, that brimstone burner: would be preferable to this garbage col- lecting virtuoso from Wisconsin. Perhaps some such arrangement could be effected to overcome the crisis; give Mephistocles some minor assignment “Up Here’, and send Senator Joa Mc- Carthy “Down There” to take over. Then it would indeed be Hell. ‘ © 5 5 At press time there was no in- dication that the crisis was any nearer solution, but a quick poll of Pacific Tribune reader dpinion left ne doubt as to the outcome. They were strongly of the opin- ion, although not without a note of sympathy. for~ Mephistocles and his illustrious citizenry, that it would be “Down There” for the big noise from Wisconsin. They were also of the opinion the classical editorial gem in the Vancouver Sun that “McCarthy’s peculiarity was his lack of scruple in admitting his lack of scruples” would scarcely make things any easier for Mephi- stocles in getting his new charge accustomed to his new “way of life.’ With Hell reputed to be full: of subversives the McCar- thy “scruples” to get an Un-Hell Activities tribunal going would keep Mephistocles busier than usual. That fact at least should be beneficial to those of _us’ still here. ' MAY 10, 1957 — PACIFIC TRIBUNE—PAGE 7 e
