Opening of a Francophone community

school in Powell River

This year, the first school day was very special for the
Francophone parents in Powell River. In this little town
on the Sunshine Coast, the very first Community school
was inaugurated on October 17, 1996. About 150 people
celebrated this historical event In British Columbia. ™

Speeches, pupils’ songs and drama plays were performed ™

during this memorable day. About 50 children from
kindergarten to grade 8 are now registered to “La Céte

Francophone neighbours.

| Francophone program receive visitors
‘every week. Since September
| children coming from Penticton are
| registered to Macdonald school in
| Summerland . When Summerland
|and Penticton school boards will
| merge on December 1, 1996 the
| Francophone students will be able to
| attend the Francophone program
| completely.

Two new schools offer the Francophone Education Program.

At Sechelt and Squamish back to
school was very special for the
Francophone parents and students. a
Francophone program has now started
at Mamquam School in Squamish for
14 children. This is the second
Francophone program in Howe Sound
district after Whistler. In Squamish a
multiple level classroom from
kindergarten to grade 4 has been
implemented since September.

At Chatelish secondary school in
Sechelt, athird Francophone program |
has been opened for grade 8, 9 and 10
students. Twenty students receive
French language courses and ten |
grade 8 students can also attend
mathematics and social studies classes
in French. The Francophone program
classroom is located in the center of
the school giving it more visibility.
