PHONE 939-9201 ° SCHOOL DISTRICT No. 43 (COQUITLAM) SE0 POIRIER STREET, COQUITLAM, B.C. V3)I 6A7 June 25, 1976. Mr. J. Campbell, Mayor, City of Port Coquitlam, 2272 McAlister, PORT COD'ITLAM, B.C. Dear Last year Canada Manpower initiated a subsidized "Job Exploration by Students Programme" in nine centres throughout Canada. This programme proved very successful and has been expanded for this summer. Two centres in B.C, were selected for the expansion - Prince George and Coquitlam School Districts. Basically under the programme Manpower provides funds to be paid employers to subsidize the wages of the students. The amount per student is $500. or 50% of the wages - whichever is less - for nine weeks employment. It is not a grant but rather a subsidy to offset cost to employers for hiring inexperienced students. The funds expended are controlled by a local committee of the Chamber of Commerce, paid to the employer after he has paid the students. The students are recommended by school counsellors, selected and hired by the employer and must be satisfactory to the employers. we ask that the City of Port Coquitlam give some consideration to hiring two or three students under this programme. Thisshould not be a meke do work programme but rather the students should be a part of the city work force for the time they are employed. The age group is 15 - 18 years old. We would like to suggest that the students could be employed with the public works, parks and recreation or possibly in the tree nursery. 4 H } | ! 4 it 7 i We recognize that the 3500. covers only part of the student's wares and the City of Port Coquitlam would have to provide the remainder; the amount depending on the wage scale. we do not specify what wages the city pays as lon as they meet the minimum set by the ‘Minimum Ware Act’. By hiring two or three students the City of Port Coouitlan would denonstrate that in Port Cocuitlam we are firmly behind the ‘Sire a Student Programme’ promoted through the media. If you wish further explanation of this programme I would be happy to appear before the Council or a committee to deal with this proposal. Thank you. Yours very truly, SCHOOL DISTRICT NC. 43 (COCUITLAM) Lent Typriteh Frank Toporchak, Occupational Counsellor.
