Senne ~ tion,” P Dr, PA, Okimi General Denlistry, Orthodontics, TMJ ts Centre reaches out to younger women THERE'S A new face over at the Terrace Women’s Resource Centre, Her name is Jessica Hogg, and at 19, she’s not only the youngest woman the centre has ever hired on a full-time basis, she’s | also the centre’s first youth program coordinator. ~ ‘Hogg, who just started , working there at the begin- ning of November, is al- feady diving head first into a major project — a plan to open a drop-in centre for young women sometime in the new year. “There’s not a lot of places in the community - where girls still in school can go. and get informa- she says, pointing out: ‘that health, relation- ship violence and low self- _ esteem: are just some of _ the he issues concerning young women in Terrace. She: stresses, however, that “you don’t need a pro- blem” to come to the fu- _ ture drop-in centre. “We're just trying to ' . ereate a comfortable at- mosphere where they can just hang out,” says the Terrace born and raised’ ‘Hogg, who graduated fram high school in 1999, While providing a safe, supporting hang out for . young women is the main goal behind opening the - drop-in centre, providing _ information will also be a key component. She points out that workshops . targeted at younger women will likely “-. be offered, too. In other words, it’ll be a younger version of the women’s resource centre upstairs, where adult women have found sup- port, information and a Starting point for social ac- tivism in the community for many years. She says she’il try to get young women to help decorate the drop in centre. As. the moment, the prey-walled basement is in desperate need of a new paint job in brighter, more inviling colours. “Tons has to be done. Hogg is reluctant to speak on behalf of her generation, “It's kind of hard to generalize,” she says, And why would she? She recognizes there’s a familiar, often-articula- led moan about what Ter- race has to offer the under 21 set. She’s heard it. Heck, she’s probably even said it herself. It’s the complaint, “Terrace sucks!” “When you’re young, all you want to do is just get out,” she explains. “Once you get out there, you discover Terrace isn’t so bad after all.
