en ee A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 26, 1997 David Hull put on notice Deer Sir: Having read Councillor David Hull’s statements on how he views the residents of Thornhill as being not much more than parasites existing off of the goodness of the city of Terrace, I am compelled to respond and perhaps give Mr. Hull an injection of intelligence. My wife and I have lived in Thornhill for 20 years at the same address. We have raised five children in our humble but loving home and paid our taxes faithfully. Yes, our rire help pay for the public transit, library, ice rink, and - Remember the Kitsumkalum ski hill? Councillors not un- Hike yourself voted for it and pumped hundreds of thou- sands of tax dollars into it — dollars collected from a lot of people who were unemployed and struggling to get by and give their children what little they could afford. , , What of the present ski hill at Shames. This one is also being subsidized in some ways by the taxpayers’ moncy. However if we look deeper we see that the people who own the ski hill also own other businesses such as con- struction companies which means our taxes are helping to - keep this type of business afloat until the ski hill can hope- fully make it on its own. Perhaps the business men involved should make up their minds as to what type of business they really want to be in and se]i off the others instead of having unemployed tax- payers helping to keep them in business. And what of that priceless hole in the water in Kitimat referred to as M.K. Bay Marina. The good directors of the regional district have been dumping tax dollars into it for decades so that well off persons who can afford yachis and the like have a place to park them. However, there isn’t En CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag enough tax money to give the people in Usk a parbage dis- posal area. And you, Mr. Hull, have the nerve to refer to good tax paying citizens in Thornhill as freeloaders, Consider per- haps that we live in Thornhill to get away from narrow- minded bureaucrats like yourself. You say we need building inspectors in Thornhill. Why? To drive up the cost of building a home and heip create an- other bureaucrat that already overiaxed people can pay for? 1 work in the building trade and can tell you that a lot of things in building codes are unnecessary other than to annoy and create more expense. TI want to point oul, Mr, Hull, that Terrace would not have McDonald’s, KMart, or other chain stores with the minimal population: inside the city limits. The large populace in the outlying areas are as much responsible for growth in the city limits as anybody. Further, everybody needs a place to start out and live within their budget. There are a lot of people living in Thombill who were not bor with silver spoons in their mouth and are not owners of businesses, Mr. Hull, if Terrace railroads Thornhill into amalgama- tion I swear to you that I will not quit running for election as a councillor on city hall until one day you will look across the table and have me to contend with in person. A. Grier, Thornhill, B.C. It’ll be better if Quebec leaves Dear Sir: There’s an old saying that if you love a creature, let it go free. If it returns, it yours. [fit doesn’t return, it was never yours, There are four reasons why we should apply this in our relationship with the people of Quebec. The first reason is that it is morally wrong to try to force another person, or group of people, into starting or maintaining a relationship. If the people of Quebec want to leave confederation, I belicve the right thing is to let them go and wish them well. The second reason is that our willingness to let them leave, would help them to make a more rational decision. They see the rest of us as villains. Our wanting them to stay makes separation a highly emotional issuc. The third reason is that we would remove the potential for blackmail from the existing relationship. So long as we are determined to keep them in confederation they can demand special ireatment. They can also get it by threaten- ing to vote against the federal government. The fourth reason is that it probably would not be the end of the world. I don’t want to see Quebec leave confedera- tion but I believe we could cope quite well and might even be better off. Our future prosperily depends more upon our stewardship of resources than the political organization of North America. Art Powell, Kitamaat Village, B.C. wk kkk Dear Sir: Canada’s French sure head the list when it comes to receiving taxpayer’s money from Ottawa. This year our federal government handed out over $3 inillion to pay for international tours by the provinces, The province of Quebec, with less than 25 per cent of the coun- try’s population, received exactly half of this generosity. Ontario was next highest, at $658,000 or 22 per cent. B.C. rated a whopping 5.5 per cent. In another move, our wonderbrains in Ottawa saw fit to close Canada’s world-class nuclear research facility at Chalk River, Ontario, with resulting annual savings of $8 million. And then, in an act of never-ending generosity it seems, they turned right around and doled out $10.8 mil- lion for French language instruction in Alberta. : Rob Hargrove, Terrace, B.C. I believe I was discriminated against by Greyhound. On March 3, a male employee called me a stinking bum then told the driver to refuse me entry on the bus. Tam on social assistance and got a job in Houston B.C. as long as I showed up by the evening of March 3. This was a camp job and the workers had to be there by March 4 I bad to get a bus ticket through social service for | only have $50 per month for myself. This took until 10 a.m. on March 3, as they had to get confirmation from the employer. I received a food voucher which took until 11-11:30 a.m. to spend and left my place about 12:15 p.m., carrying around 200: pounds of clothing, bedding, work gear, cooking utensils and luggage, The bus Jeaves at 1:20 p.m. and J had a 1.5 to 2km walk so I was boogeying. Yes, I was sweating some when I arrived and hung around outside to cool off. I washed up and combed my hair to look presentable. About 15 minutes after the bus arrived the driver said ‘no entry’, I asked why and he said people were complaining. I went to sec. MILA’ ‘Helmut “Giesbrecht at the MLA office and he said he didn’t notice anything offensive to his senses, except [ could use a hair cul. Now I have to reregister with social ser- vice, explain to my landlord I need my place back and probably have to pay back the food voucher that I received. I phoned the employer and was told ‘no show, no ga’, but they will give me employment when the snow melis around the end of May. I have talked to some old folks and they say this was like in the 1930s when you weren’t up to dress code and couldn’t ride on transit. Do I have to be a hobo and risk my life and possible jail by jumping on moving trains just to go to work? Don’t some people realize there are poor out there who cannot afford the standard of living but are trying. I’m not a thief, murderer, or robber, but when things like this happen a person wonders if that's why some have become onc, Or is it expected of the poor and homeless to become such, Dale Derkson, Terrace B.C. Worried about college Dear Sir: I belisve we are going to lose Northwest Community College altogether untess some fundamental issues surrounding excessive adininistration costs are addressed soon. The purpose of this institute is to deliver courses to communities in this geographic area. Administration costs are reported at 55 per cent of the annual budget although the telephone list for the college demonstrates an even higher portion of per- sonnel in administration! Why is the board so complacent in ac- cepting the cutting of courses as a measure of reducing deficits when no administrative cuts are included? Why is president Michael] Hill taking a year’s leave of ab- sence when there is a financial crisis? And how about the $800,00 in travel expenses for the administatlon alone? Some business-oriented government is going to get elecied and simply shut the college down. Why? Because the adminis- tration is seriously compromising the pur- pose of the college’s existence if fewer courses are being offered and administra- tion costs are high. Any sane business person would examine the greatest expense during a financial crisis. Why does the board continue ts listen to an administration that wishes to preserve itself al the expense of community courses? Why docs the board refuse to get an independent opinion on the financial crisis? If the college has any value, this should alarm you, David West, Terrace B.C. An open letter to John How: Dear Sir: In your letter of Match 5, you attacked the Reform Party of Canada for, as you put it “‘trying to gag the opposition’. It is interesting to note that you and others of the socialist ilk have adopted a atrategy of trying to gag opposition by name calling, personal attacks and in- huemio. In doing so, you are trying to get atten- tion away from your own socialist party’s Failings of socialism failings and focus attention elsewhere. This strategy is probably the only hope for the morally bankrupt party which has produced such outrages as budget lies, collapsing forest and mining industries, Steady erosion of personal incomic, ever increasing taxes, Sihota scandals, Com- monwealth Bingo, B.C. Hydro Interna- tional, racist land claims policies and more. I think, Mr. How, that you protesteth too much, Bill Watson, Terrace B.C. 19 cu. ft.
