A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 7, 1995 CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD. The Mail Bag Habitat concerns premature Dear Sir: The April 12 issue of the Ter- race Standard carried an article ented, Cuts are out of touch with reality,’” concerning the reassignment of some Ministry of the Environment staff in order to accommodate increased work load due to the Forest. Practices Code and the BC Forest Renewal - program. The concern people expressed in the article was initially shared by myself, but may be very pre- mature, ; The northwest region, which currently bas 101 persons on staff, will have 106 when the ‘dust settlés.” Ten F.T.E.s are to be reassigned and become part of the 5 added this year due to the implementation of the Forest Practices Code and part of the seven added as’’a result of BC Forest Renewal. Next year, there will be three more added as 4 result of the Forest Practices Code, and 1 more from BC Forest Renewal, All this trans[ates into a net gain of 5 F.T.E.s. The government has given the environmental issues (habitat pro- tection) around forest harvesting a@ high priority. Habitat protection from urban development {is to be maintained amd, in fact, more staff will be available to do all habitat protection. As with any changes in struc- ture and priorities, the effects will have to be monitored. If any fu- ture reduction in habitat pro- teclion results from these changes I am confident that the Minister will hear the concerns form all citizens, including myself. Yours truly, Helmut Giesbrecht, MLA (Skeena). THIS SHOT up Stop sign was found by reader John How on the Beam Station Rd. Which prompted the letter below. y ker a's Accountability is the key .... . | , Am open letter to Mike Scutt (M.P.; Skeena) * #2 Dear Sir; Much tadoo has been made recently about the proposed Tegistration of firearms under Bill C - 68. The organized resistance fo that really rather simple Act is being provided by what in the USA is known as the gun lobby but which, here in Canada, styles itself as Responsible Firearms Owners. Who are the RFO? Are they a registered charity with membership lists, a newslet- ter, secret handshakes, and other swell stuff? Are they legitimate hunters? Do their numbers in- clude a few juveniles who heed some higher calling to pack semi- automatic weapons around public campgrounds? Are they affiliated with their American cousins (some of whom ascribe to a God- given right to take target practice on a couple of dummies labeled “Bill” and "Hilary", then boast about what fun it was on their nationally-syndicated radio show)? Do they ever get in- ebriated? How do they feel about stop signs? Ive no problem with responsible ownership of suitable firearms by those with a legiti- mate, demonstrable need to hold them — timber cruisers, or Brinks guards, or trained and licenced hunters, or Reform Party staff protecting their circled wagons and women folk, What we need, I guess, is a registry of Irresponsible Gun Owners, where the whackos who want a little fun with their firearms can get on a list arid await their turn, Then, when the next firearm tragedy occtirs, we can pin it on an Irresponsible Gun Owner and all breathe a sigh of relief that the culprit has been captured, the threat disarmed. See, there’s the crux. A what isn’t a wo: a warrant for a ‘John Doe #2’" doesn’t translate into one less whacko walking the streets with lethal capacities, Self-styled ‘*responsibility”’ simply does not provide the “‘accountability’’ required for the community to protect itself from citizens who choose to arm them- selves with personnel-piercing fire power. A gun registry would be a start. At the next election, you'll be held accountable for — among other things — your vote on arms control. Please, vote responsibie on Bill C-68. Don’tdump on recyclers Dear Sir; : Earth day, The emphasis the last few years has been to learn how torecycle ourgarbage, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Not too long ago we did have a recycling depot in town that failed, It scems that some individuals are willing to monitor their gar- bage to bring to a recycling depot, yet they’re unwilling to monitor the rest. And some don’t do either. T happen to be a tecycler who found it more important to recycle over 30,000 cans that I salvaged from the dump in the last year. And I’m proud to say that reading peoples’ personal papers was of no importance to me. It takes only a second to rip or shred those personal papers before throwing them out if they’re teally con- cemed about them getting into the wrong hands. The issue of personal hygiene should be looked at as a fact of life. ; Unfortunately many have the attitude that recycling from’ the dump is a dirty thing to do. We are a very wasteful society and we can't wait and rely on our government and politicians to help. [feel with two dumps in the Terrace arca that one should be classified as an All Section Recycling Disposal Site. Then those who disapprove of recyclers have the choice to go to the other dump. , Mari-Lenne Pierce, Terrace.
