FOOD GUIDE 5 CANADA’s Food Guide biased? ~ ° There have been several reports in the media recently, (most notably the Ot- lawa .Citizen and the Globe and Mail) suggesting that food industries somehow controlled the new Canada’s Food Guide for Healthy. Eating... - Ag a result, some people are asking: if- they can trust the guide, me ~The Answer? ’ An emphatic ‘“Yes!”’ The new Food Guide was developed in consultation with over 200 stakeholders. They included ‘consumers, health professionals - (like Nutritionists), universities, yolunieer organizations (like the Heart and Stroke Founda- tion and the Canadian Cancer Society), as well as the food industry. > : Under Freedom Of Informa- tion legislation, people can re- quest government documents. + In the case of the food guide, they asked Health and Welfare ments pertaining to the sug- gestions made by the food in- dustry... _ They, then looked at changes io the! “guide, and said ‘‘Aha! they made tliese changes be- cause the food industry asked them to,”’ Since people questioning the guide. didn’t ask to’ see the suggestions, from other groups, they’ may have been unaware that..the same recommenda- tions _were being made by many: others for scientific rea- sons....For..example: if the protein and iron content of 50 to--100' grams of meat is similar tothe amount in 1 to 2 eggs, why’ would we list the serving § size of eggs as only 1? This, was. pointed. out by many: ‘people, not just the Egg Marketing Board. ‘ Another | criticism of the irite-is: “that ‘there is too.much~ étnphasis: “On ‘the meat ‘and — dairy'food groups, due to the undue” influence of marketing boards. If: that were truc, then there “apparently was a lot MORE influence from the pro- duce and grain producers of Canada; There are twice as many tecommended servings Of these. plant foods as there are of the animal foods in the Guide (as there should be). { What that:tells me is. that none..of: the. boards. had any more (or any Jess) impact than the-scientific people did. Alleziof.< the stakeholders worked together to produce a piactical and useful document. “Canada's Food Guide was revised to help people trans- late® ‘the Nutrition Recom- mendations for Canadians (a fairly dry official document, wiitten in: bureaucrat-ese) into everyday. food choices, To do oS Seok ; “TO OUR BROTHER Our Brother Died Last Wesk.
