Ballonists pass halfway mark

MARSHFIELD,. Mass.
New Mexico businessmen
passed the halfway mark
Sunday with no reported
problems in their attempt to
be the first to cross the
Atlantic Ocean in a balloon.

The Doube Eagle, a 17
metre 55 foot neopren-
coated nylon balloon, was
reported 1,260 kilometres 5
miles east of Labrador and
320 km 200 miles southeast
of the southern trip of
Greenland late Sunday
afternoon. .

. That put the balloon and
its pilots - Ben Abruzzo, 47,
and Maxie Anderson, who
celebrationhis 44th birthday
Saturday past the southern
tip of Greenland on their
flight to Europe.
- The balloonists had hoped
to land in France, but Mike
Leavitt, a ground crew
spokesman, said the balloon
was on a more northerly
route. and might land in
Britain.or Norway.

Leavitt sald the crait
might touch down late today

reported no problems and
that “everything seems to

Messages to and from the
balloon were being relayed

averaged a speed of a little
less than 72 km an hour
since it lifted off Friday. It
was flying at an altitude of
about 2.4 km (8,000 feet),
compared with an earlier 1.7
km (5,500 feet),- because
“there are better winds
there.”

The balloon is filled with

9,030 cubic metres 101,000
cubic feet of helium, and the
gondola is a catamaran
designed to serve as a
resuce boat should they
come down at sea. .
- Leavitt said the flight was
being tracked by the
Weaterh Service Corp., a
private firm, and the
Canadian Air Route Traffic
Control.

He said the U.S. Coast
Guard and the Halifax
Rescue Co-ordination
Centre of the Canadian
Coast Guard were being kep
