“Human Rights” charade in Rome — of fascists, Special to the Tribune BERLIN — ‘“‘The Second International Sakharov Hearings on Human Rights held in Rome Was a masked ball in which Jew- ish misleaders, Ukrainian war Criminals, Hitler agents and war- Mongering fanatics masqueraded as fighters for human rights.”’ That was the summary made | here this week of the Rome meet- Ing of so-called ‘‘dissidents’’ by the Canadian writer, Sydney Gordon. : Gordon, who is best known for his international bestseller, with Ted Allan, The Scalpel, the Sword, is putting the finishing touches to a book “‘about sup- Posed dissidents, real fascists, emigre Ukrainian nationalists and the current prostitution of the Concept of human rights’’. A Nasty World In a commentary made here in Berlin, where he lives, Gordon Said‘ ‘For some years now I have been investigating the dark nether world in which most of the par- ticipants in the so-called Kharov Conference at Rome Operate. It is a nasty world in which the truth is murdered daily. It is a world in which people call- Ing themselves Zionists work Closely with mass murderers of Jews who call themselves free- dom fighters; in which Ukrainian _ fationalists, journalists in the pay Of the CIA, secret agents and old Hitlerites pursue a conspiracy against peace and detente. The so-called Second v Conference was sup- Posed to expose violations of human rights in the Soviet Union and the socialist world. All that it €xposed was the debased and un- Scrupulous character of its parti- Cipants. Mafia of Fascists It also confirmed the fact that they have dropped all pretence and are publicly presenting them- Selves as members of an interna- tional mafia of fascists, col- orators of fascists and war Criminals.’? : Gordon said a look at the list of Speakers was enough to establish at point. One of the main speakers,” Tr Said, ‘‘was Leonid Plyusch. his former inmate of a Soviet Psychiatric hospital maintains the is the only true communist and that the Soviet Communist pany. has abandoned com- ; eum. It was the pre- ie among the main speakers of on Wiesenthal and the former t Partisans attacking nazi World War Two. Ukrainian Cardinal Yosif Slipyi. __ ‘Wiesenthal is an ardent Zion- ist: He has boasted of his close ’ connections to Israeli secret ser- vices. He has for years cultivated the legend that he is a Jewish av- enger mercilessly hunting down nazi murderers of Jews. When he appeared on the same platform with Cardinak Slipyi, did he point ‘the finger at Slipyi and denounce him as a Hitlerite, an enemy of the Jews and human rights? ‘‘Not in the least. Neither de- nounced the other. Both united in denouncing the Soviet Union. : This should surely have a shatter- ing effect among Jews and others who are not yet aware of the grotesque fact that various Zion- ists, including Israeli agents, have for years been collaborating closely with mass murderers of Jews, with Hitlerites and with war criminals, = Sate ad Supported Hitler ‘‘Who, for example; is Cardinal Slipyi, If Wiesenthal is such an expert on war criminals, he must know that until 1945 Cardinal Slipyi was deputy head of the West Ukrainian Uniate Catholic Church, under the notorious Met- ropolitan Scheptitsky, and that both supported the Hitlerite oc- cupation of the Ukraine during World War Two. ‘‘Both gave their blessings to Ukrainian traitors in the Organi- zation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) who. worked and fought for Hitler, whose members en- tered Lvov in nazi uniforms in 1941 and slaughtered the city’s entire Jewish population, along with anti-nazi Poles and Ukrainians. ‘Cardinal Slipyi gave his bless- ings to members of OUN who set up bandit units with nazi arms to fight the Soviet armies. He praised these groups which wiped out whole Jewish and Ukrainian villages, and slaughtered other Soviet citizens with a bestiality equal to that of the worst nazis. He and his chief, Scheptitsky, gave refuge to Ukrainian agents of Hitler like A. Melnyk, leader of an OUN faction; in Scheptitsky’s palace. Gave His Blessings ‘Cardinal Slipyi came to the nazis’ aid in 1943 with an appeal to the Ukraine’s youth to join the traitorous Ukrainian Galicia Divi- sion the nazis were trying to set up to aid their hard-pressed forces. When his superior, Schep- titsky, named priests who were to act as chaplains in the various Galicia units, it was Cardinal Slipyi who, at a public ceremony in Lvov, gave them his and the hierarchy’s blessing for their work in the Hitlerite forces. — “It is noteworthy that Cardinal — re : > \ ary) vs H ‘ t ry $ < ‘ occupation armies in the Ukraine during Slipyi to the bitter end exhorted the ‘faithful’ to fight against their Soviet homeland until a nazi vic- tory that never came. When the nazis were defeated, Cardinal Slipyi was tried as a war criminal and sentenced to life imprison- ment. At the same time, in a wave of revulsion against him, Schep- titsky and their hierarchy, the lower clergy and rank-and-file members of the the Uniate Church threw out all the pro- Hitler traitors and reformed their ranks in the Greek Orthodox Church. “Cardinal Slipyi was released by Soviet authorities -in 1963 through agreement with the Vati- can and left the USSR for Rome. There, the Pope ordered him to remain silent in the seclusion of the Vatican. That led to a furious outcry from the Organization of ‘Ukrainain ~ Nationalists, which called Slipyi ‘the greatest Christ- ian of our century’ and began a campaign of revilement against the Pope which is still going on. _ Presented as a Hero ‘‘Cardinal Slipyi has defied the Vatican’s request that he keep si- lent. He has travelled the world as a propagandist of the OUN. He has been presented to. Canadian audiences as a great hero, with rio mention of his services for Hitler. And now, at the Sakharov Con- ference in Rome, Plyusch and Wiesenthal have joined with this war criminal, this priest who bles- sed the killers of Jews, this re- negade who recruited soldiers for Hitler’s armiés in the Ukraine. Now, too, Solzhenitsyn and Sakharov have lent their names to a conference on human rights at | which the main speaker was a war criminal whose life has been de- voted to destroying human rights.” Among the small-fry at the Rome conference was an un- known evangelical pastor, sup- posedly from the GDR, who claimed the GDR was persecuting the Evangelical Church. ‘‘Unfortunately for this pas-. tor,’ Gordon said, “there are cordial relations between the GDR government, the Evangeli- cal Church, the communities of Jewish believers and other groups. In recent months both Christian and Jewish leaders have had occasion to testify to that ‘cordiality.”” In his forthcomirg book, Gor- don announced, he would give the names of confessed spies and war ; criminals who the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, Amnesty International, some prominent Canadians and others have pub- licized as persecuted heroes of the fight for human rights in the socialist world. Saini tae AGAIN AIDING “UNITA’’ — e South West Africa Peoples Organizati (SWAPO) has charged that the South African eee has Ei ‘a assistance to the so-called UNITA movement, with the intention of establishing’ an ‘‘independent’’ anti-Communist, anti-MPLA and anti-SWAPO regime in southern Angola. After the Angolan people with the assistance of Cuba, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and other states, repelled the UNITA-South African invasion, the South African regime began to train and arm UNITA and foreign mercenaries at bases in illegally occupied Namibia. STRAUSS LAUDS CHILEAN FASCIST JUNTA BONN — A group of West German clergymen and university pro- fessors have asked court action against Franz Joseph Strauss, the Bavarian right-winger and head of the Christian Social Union Party. The action was demanded after Strauss went to Chile, met with dic- tator Pinochet and praised the fascist system. The group demanded that Strauss be brought to trial on charges of “‘aiding and abetting a terrorist organization — the ruling fascist junta in Chile’. : West German chancellor Helmut Schmidt, told his Social Democra- tic Party he was “‘sick and tired’’ of Strauss’ support for foreign right-wing dictatorship. : PROTEST AGAINST N-BOMB SPREADING HELSINKI — Thousands marched here last week against the U.S. decision to produce the neutron bomb and similar protests were held in the Finnish cities of Turku and Tampere. Vigorous anti-neutron bomb actions have also been taking place in the Federal Republic of Germany with trade unions playing a leading role in the fight to prevent NATO from deploying the weapon on European soil. A petition in Austria signed by thousands calls on the government to take a clear stand against the N-bomb and its deployment, and some 15 ,000 have signed a petition in Switzerland.
