GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES DEMANDED

COL Action group plans to unite
consumers, farmers in milk fight

COST OF LIVING Action Com-
mittee is planning to hold a milk
price protest meeting in Pender
Auditorium within the next two
weeks to unite farmers and con-
sumers in a fight-back campaign
against soaring prices.

Mrs. ‘Hilda Scott, secretary of
the COL committee, said the or-
ganization will continue to press
for government subsidies to pro-
ducers and -lower prices to con-
sumers.

A meeting of the committee in
Pender Auditorium on Monday
this week was attended by farm-
ers‘ representatives from the

Cloverdale area.
“We strongly condemn the un-
warranted action of the Milk

‘Board in granting an immediate

increase in the price of milk to
the consumer in what appears to
be an obvious attempt to split
the producer and consumer who
are agreed on the need for a goy-
ernment subsidy as a _ solution
to the problem,” a statement is-
sued by the COL Action Commit-
tee said. :

“The action of the board has
solved nothing, but will result on-
ly in the creation of additional
problems and an aggravation of

the crisis in the milk industry.
“The Milk Board has handed
the producer a package deal—
a higher price and a disappear-
ing market. A necessary com-
modity is placed still further be-
yond the reach of the people.
“If emergency action were
necessary (and we agree it was),
the board should have adjourned
its sessions and proceeded to
Victoria to impress upon the gov-
ernment -the necessity of grant-
ing an immediate temporary sub-
sidy until such time as a more
permanent solution could be

worked out.”

she said. ‘Well, I don’t intend
to feed the children skim milk.
We always considered skim milk
feed for the pigs, where I was
raised. I experimented with
powdered milk at the time fresh
milk went up to 19 cents a quart,
but I found it cost 20 cents a
quart for powdered whole milk,
and the children,didn’t like the
taste of it, either.” ©. :

Earl Watson, have three children,

a boy and a girl in their teens~

and a little fellow of six. Harl’s

father, who is an old age pen-
sioner, is also a member of their
household. Earl has a_ better-
than-average income but like
other families, they have been.

“This latest jump means that
I will have to cut down on the
amount of milk we use,” she said.
“We used to get five quarts and
now we get four quarts a day.

meat quite so much but I sure
hate giving my children less
milk.”
