to stop smuggling _

RCMP ARE trying a new way of
cracking down on tobacco smug-
pling in the northwest.

Starting Jast month, the force
began publishing ads in weckly

being paid on tobacco products _

and social benefits. ;

in taxes that go for a whole range
of services in our health and so-

“The more smuggling there is,
the less taxes are paid and that
puts a sirain on the: whole sys-
tem,’” he added.

Beach estimated that between
$3 million and $4 million worth
of tobacco a year is smuggled
through Siewart and Hyder,

RCMP have a variety of legisla-
tion: they can use, including the
seizure of smuggled goods and
the vehiclé used until payment of

-taxes for ihe goods is made.

For large quantity. seizures, a
vehicle can stay impounded until

‘its fair market value is paid. .

Those involved can also face
fines and possible jail sentences
