Course helps young girls GIRLS IN GRADES six and seven are being invited to take part in a unique program, put on by The Fam- ily Place, Called Girls in the 90s, the program is designed to give girls a boost to their self-esteem, something which many studies show that girls need at that age. “We hope to give them a better sense of who they are and where they’re going,” says program organizer Darlene Westerman. It’s based on a similar program which bas been successful in Van-. couver. We'll deal with how girls feel about themselves, how they feel about school,’’ she says. Westerman says that by talking to girls ata young age, she hopes to try and forestall some of the many social pressures they face. “They're worried that they’re too fat, or too thin,”’ she says. Girls as young as grade four start worrying abont dicts, so Westerman thinks this would be an ideal age group to reach. — ; The program will be structured around activities, such as role playing games. And there’s plenty of time for free discussion. The Family Place gave out flyers to Uplands and Cassie Hall girls, and Wesierman is hoping for a good response. The program started this Monday, and runs each Monday from 4-5:30 p.m. for 12 weeks, at the Family Place, 4553 Park Ave. Girls can join at any time, and drop-ins are wel- come. There’s no cost to participants, For more info call Darlene at 638- 1863 or Natasha at 635-4479. ) DAYS ONLY!
