U.S. imperialism is on the defensive. Now is the time for the peace forces to mount a major offensive for peace. Every avenue open to us must be used to change the direction of Canada’s foreign policy. Canadian Communists call on the electors to drive out of office on June 25th, all politicians who support the dirty U.S. war in Vietnam.” The leaflet concluded by saying: “The Vietnamese are fighting for their right to control their own country, to live in peace, to adopt the social system that suits them, including the system of socialism if they so desire. Rankin said the Canadian public want to hear what the policies are of ‘‘the swinger’? who is now Prime Minister, and if they are not the policies we want we should. “swing him out.” Under the chairmanship of Tom Clarke, vice president of the Vancouver local of the IWA, the huge crowd heard NDP MLA Alex MacDonald speak on behalf of T. C. Douglas, MP (who was detained in Ottawa), Rabbi John Sherwood and UBC student Hilda Thomas. Opening the meeting Clarke regretted the support which the official labor movement in the U.S. headed by George Meany, was giving to the war in Vietnam. However, he pointed to the challenge arising in USS. labor against Meany’s policy. MacDonald charged that Canada was very deeply involved in the war in Vietnam and so was every Canadian. He said that if the U.S. can get away with‘this aggression the world will have taken a long ‘‘march towards the nuclear graveyard.” Accusing the Canadian government of backing the U.S. war financially and in other ways, MacDonald said the U.S. squeeze on Canada has resulted in high interest rates and lack of action on housing’ and other social needs in Canada. “Canadian arms are stoking the American war in Vietnam . . . and we have no right to pretend to be neutral while we are trafficking in arms. This should stop at once,’’ he said amidst loud applause. MacDonald said the protest movement of today has checked the warmakers. Urging that Canada should stand up as an indepedent power for peace and humanity, MacDonald said: ‘‘Keep marching, keep protesting. The fight must be ” won. Trudeau must halt war shipments’ Rabbi Sherwood said he was speaking on behalf of those members of the Jewish faith who are faithful to their thousands of years old tradition. Among the many organizations which took part in the march were: Marine Workers and Boilermakers Union; International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 213; Voice of Women, Religious Society of ,Quakers; B.C. Peace Council; Communist Party, Bethune Youth Club; Vietnam Day Committee; University Teachers Committee on Vietnam; United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union; Nanaimo Committee for Peace in Vietnam; International Brigade (Spanish veterans), and others.
