THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM MEMORANDUM TO Igor Zahynacz DAE: February 21, 1992 City Engineer FROM: Anne T. Pynenburg PROJECT: # 306 Project Technician SUBJECT: ADDITION OF A BUS ZONE AT POCO REC. CENTRE Install a" Bus Zone" extending from the bus stop (#160) to the northeast corner of the Recreation Centre (front entrance) at a cost of $150. Attached is a letter from the Senior Transportation Engineer at BC Transit requesting that changes be made to the parking signs in front of the Poco Rec. Centre in the vicinity of bus stop # 160. Cars have been observed legally parked and/or stopped in front of the Rec. Centre oy making it difficult for buses to pull out from the bus stop. i There is a sign for the existing bus stop at the northeast comer of the building and a "No Parking" sign at the entrance to the east parking lot.(See sketch), Two options would alleviate congestion in this area: 1, Install a total of 4 signs "No Stopping Anytime" signs restricting cars from | stopping to drop off passengers. The signs would be approximately 8-10m apart in front of the Rec. Centre starting at the bus stop and extending to the northeast comer of the building.(front entrance) Cost of 4 signs @ $100ea = $400.00 Restrict the inside curb lane closest to the building as a "Bus Zone". This * restriction would extend from the bus stop at the front of the building to the exit onto Kingsway Avenue. Cost of markings for 1 bus lane = $150.00 Option 1 would provide a viable solution to the problem but generally signs restricting activities in an area are most effective when patrolled regularly by bylaw officers. Patrolling and the cost. of the signs wouid become the most expensive option. Option 2, however, would provide an inexpensive solution while acting as a deterent to parking and it would give more authority to the buses. Atine T.
