4 ESSE ORATION OF THE GH CON ° Cy Wurpotation uf the Billape of Bazelton P.O.BOX40, HAZELTON, B.C VOILYO PH.842-5991 FAX 842-5152 13 May 1991 MAY 27 O91 Dear Mayor and Council, In January 1990 we circulated for your review and endorsement a "Forest Industry Charter of Rights". This document was a grassroots attempt to conceptualize a Forestry Practices Act that if adopted would reduce the number of forestry related conflicts experienced between governments, industry, and citizens. We are pleased to report that many Municipalities in the province took time to review and positively critique our original effort. We also received many encouraging letters fram interest groups, forestry companies, and citizens. As a result of receiving over 300 responses to the "Charter" we concluded that it was our responsibility to revise the- document to reflect both our growing insights into forest stewardship requirernents, and the suggestions sent to us by many serious reviewers. After much effort we are pleased to report that the "Charter" has been— printed in an expanded format and retitled "A Framework For Watershed — Stewardship". The “Framework" now includes over 60 principals of 'new forestry’ that we believe if implemented would provide both an economic and ecological legacy for future generations of British Columbians. Although there remains debate over the wording of individual principles, we believe the "Framework" nas evolved a long way towards becoming the type of _ document that could easily be translated into law. | At this time we would like to again respectfully request that you and your Council : ", 1) review the proposed "Framework For Watershed Stewardship”;
