July Sth, 1978 FROM: Public Works ‘Committee Report from the Public Works Committee Meeting held June 30th, 1978, - IN ATTENDANCE: Alderman E.W. Mabbett , Alderman U.M. Traboulay F.E. Peters, P. Eng. Ll. Melnechenko, P. Eng. (part-time) ITEM I . ° Re: Watermain on Whyte Avenue | Earlier the Committee had recommended the installation of an 8~inch watermain on Whyte Avenué -between Shaughnessy Street and the 24-inch main along the river. This had been refer.2d back by Council for further study. , , The Assistant Engineer reported on his investigation of future downtown requirements. He reported that fire flow requirements could vary from 1500 gallons per minute to 3000 gallons per minute depending on the type’ of future development and that to be on the safe side-we should install a 10-inch main rather than an 8~inch main even though the existing conn- ection is for an 8-inch main. The additional cost of the 10-inch main over the 8~inch main would be only about $2.00 per foot. Although experience has shown that an 8-inch diameter network of watermains is usually sufficient for a downtown area, the Committee felt that the installation of a 10-inch main on Whyte Avenue would provide greater flexibility for future design and installation of the remaining downtown water system. The Committee therefore recommends that a 10-inch watermain be ; installed on Whyte Avenue from Shaughnessy to the 24-inch main at acost of $ 21,500.00 which is § 1,500.00 more than the cost of the 8-inch watermain which was originally proposed. The Committee also considered the possibility of extending the watermain on Whyte to tie into the 6-inch main in Leigh Square. This would complete a loop and provide bene- fits in both directions including a greater fire flow capability on McAllister. The additional length of watermain between Shaugh- nessy and Leigh Square would cost approximately $ 9,900.00. Funds for this project are available in the future watermain reserve budget. [duanee
