CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD Dear Sir: I feel the need to comment regarding a letter in the Octo- ber 12 issue of The Terrace Standard, “Teachers and Telus workers deserve community support”. My question is why? , The entire union concept is archaic and outdated. It may , have served its purpose at the turn of the last century, but in this day and age they seem more like bullies. Maybe sheep is a better térm. « I hear that other unions are going to blindly support these unions. To -heck with what the actual i issues are, just blind support. | Another letter had the quote “So over my dead body will I cross this line.” Wow. The question was posed, “Do you want to lose the ability of free thought?” Where does that ‘come from? _ Anyone getting into the teaching profession knows ahead of time that it is a career like no other. And-I do have some personal knowledge of the issues as I have a parent who was ateacher. | And now our children are being held ransom, illegally I might add. The Telus workers seem to be lawbreakers as | well. What second side of the story is there to 0 breaking the law? Can teachers really tell: me they have it so tough? Ev-. erything can be. made better, but come on. If people are so unhappy with their jobs or employers they are always free to. ars) Dear Sir: I have just finished reading your story about the’ generos- " ity of Mrs, Vesta Douglas and thought it was wonderful to hear all that she has done over the years. I lived in Terrace many years ago, and I have this one memory that involves Mrs. Douglas and Hallowe’en. When ‘ I was about 7 years old, my family tc took me to Mrs. Douglas’ house trick or treating. She answered the:door dressed up in a witch costume and invited all the kids into the house. The house was all deco- of the homes I had been to had nothing other than a few ‘Dear Sir: I wish to express my condolences to the Smaha fam- ily on the unfortunate passing of Jack Smaha. I work in a non-union, real world job and am very happy with the career I have made for myself with no union inter- vention. Nobody I have spoken to on this issue has any sup- port for either set of workers. . [have to question the math’skills of these workers who are out for a period of time over these issues. And make no mistake about it, whether it be a strike or a lockout, in the end it is because no agreement could be reached, on both sides. No boo-hoo for locked-out workers. They chose not to agree and go back to work. If you bicker over a couple per cent pay increase, and are out of work for months over it,. well just do the math and you end up behind. . I would think all Canadians, being such a hockey-crazy nation, would have learned more from the NHL labour dis- pute. Who won? Of course, the owners (read: the employ- - ers) because their pockets will always be deeper. As for Telus making good profits, that is irrelevant to the workers wanting more money. | guarantee they won’t sign a deal that says they take a pay cut in the years where their: . employer takes a loss, will they? - Yes, at the end of the day we all-want improvements to» our jobs and our lives, but breaking the law, and preventing our children from obtaining an education is not the way to handle things. , — ; Chris Stone, Terrace, B. c. Thanks for a wonderful memory pumpkins outside. _ Things were going along great when all of a sudden she ‘whipped out this broom, gave a loud witch cackle and start- ed-chasing us kids around her house, gently swatting at.us with the broom until we ran back outside!
