New level of medicine introduced AS MANY as 15 students start taking training this fall in delivering a new level of : health care in the north. The students will become nurse practitioners, a health care professional who is ‘midway between a nurse and . a physician, after finishing a master’s degree at the Uni- ‘versity of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) in Prince George. Popularinotherprovinces’ . but fairly new in B.C., nurse’ practitioners are viewed’ as _ one way to provide services ‘that supplement those of . _ hurses and physicians i in urban or rural areas. . The Northern Health Authority wants to hire six nurse practitioners this year and more as time goes on. Training takes two years for full time. students and four years for part time students. UNBC official Rob van Adrichem_ expects the students will do their practical training in various Places throughout the north. Students must first: be registered r nurses and have consid- erable experience, he added. “Some of the nurses are already doing a lot of what a. nurse practitioner might do’but now they will have a chance » to get a credential to recognize that and to be compensated for that as well,” van Adrichem added. Nurse practitioner programs have been underway at UBC and UVic for two years and the first class of 15 students at each institution graduated this year. Unlike physicians who are assigned billing numbers by the provincial Medical Services Plan and are paid for the . procedures they do, nurse practitioners are paid wages. ‘Dr. Ian Blue, who heads UNBC’s nurse practitioner pro- gram, expects those hired by the Northern Health Authority . to concentrate on family care and preventative care. “Family practitioners may not be in a.position to.spend _ half and hour or an hour with a patient. But a nurse practitio- _ner, who will be on a salary, can do that,” he said. - “They’ll be able to take a great interest in you as‘a patient ~ and in family history, concentrating on prevention and health promotion.”"° * Do “The docs are very, good at what they do and nurse prac- titioners will complement their role,” said Blue. Nurse practitioners will have admitting privileges: at hos- pital and be able to write prescriptions. ~ "Blue doesn’t yet foresee the day when nurse practitio- tiers will be on staff at emergency rooms assuming the role played by doctors. “TI see this as an evolutionary process and not a revolu- tionary one,” he said. UPLAND’S NURSERY Quinton Freer a ‘HOT SUMMER FUNGUS) It's been a beautiful year, lots of sun, an early warm spring, and a basically mild winter. Excellent growing weather, even roses are looking good without putting in much of an effort. To my surprise a couple of weeks ago a lady brought me a maple leaf covered in a white fussy powder. My to say it out loud because it seemed ridiculous to have, mildew in this beautiful weather, ‘so | went to the book. It’ was powdery mildew no doubt about it, but. why? | didn’t have. an explanation. It thought that it was only an isolated incidence, so | dropped it. A few days later | found another maple tree with the same thing, then another in a different location. | started looking into it.. A specialist at the Department of Agriculture told me. that dramatic weather changes from wet to hot or. heavy morning dew and hot days is favorable for. powdery mildew. | then read that heavy . pruning will make a tree more susceptible especially if iti is pruned incorrectly. = Powdery mildew can be deadly on roses, but it's unlikely to kill a tree although it will set it back. If -you notice you have powdery mildew on your tree or.shrub and it is only on a few branches, simply remove the leaves or branch. Then clean your | tools and clothes so you don’t spread the fungus. Powdery Mildew spores are spread by the wind. If you feel you ‘need to spry there are fungicides - readily available. * Please seal all plant samples i ina clear Zip lock bag before bringing them to us for inspection. spreading the problem to other plants. a" ; DAYS! a 4 says. it. views nurses practitioners as a valuable, addition to. -|i., medical services up here. “A place like Granisle, for instance, might not have the , population for a physician to survive on a fee for service ba- sis, but a nurse practitioner there might just be the answer,” he said. News In Brief Hospital food checked FIRST THE cleanliness of health care facilities was investigated. Now the health authorities across the. province will develop standards to check the quality, safety and satisfaction levels of food services _at provincial health care institutions. “This level of accountability and transparency has not existed in BC before and it is a first in Canada,” says - thority which is organizing the effort. “The new provincial processes will use common tools and processes to promote consistency across the province in measuring quality and patient satisfaction. These processes will enable health authorities to share best practices more easily and quickly to the benefit of all patients,” he said. The satisfaction surveys, safe food handling audits, and nutritional analysis are expected to be repeated an- nually. Results will be reported publicly.Health author- ities are now looking for a company to do the work, On-line danger tagged A MISSION, B.C. society is making a northern tour in early fall to educate people about the dangers of on-line sexual exploitation. "— - The Safe Online Outreach Society (SOLOS): says it has government money to hold workshops in Terrace, _ Kitimat, Prince Rupert, Smithers and other northern communities. _ ‘The workshops will t train youth, professionals , and the public about how to first how to recognize online sexual exploitation and then how to deal with it. Cullen invited to study US politics and culture | SKEENA-BULKLEY VALLEY MP Nathan Cullen has been selected as one of just 20 Canadians named to visit the United States as part of a prestigious leadership ” program. The US International Leadership Program gives re- _ cipients a chance to spend up to 21 days in the United | States meeting with senior officials, business people and cultural groups to discuss their experiences. Cullen hopes to use the opportunity to investigate how eco- nomically depressed resource-dependant communities in the U.S. have been able to bounce back and become » economic drivers. Learning from their experiences could prove valuable to this region. “Arkansas went from an economic basket case to one of the leading states for economic investment and edu- _ cational development,” Cullen says, adding he hopes to meet with Bill Clinton, that state’s former governor to discuss the turn-around.
