Three file to be Alliance
candidate in next election

IT’S OFFICIAL — there's
going to be a solid race for
the Canadian Alliance no-
mination for the Skeena ri-
ding in the next federal
election.

Former Stewart mayor
Andy Burton, current Van-
couver Island Alliance MP
Bill Gilmour. and Thornhill
resident. Ted Wyatt have
filed nomination papers.

The candidate’s posi-
lion became open in Au-
gust when current Alliance

‘MP Mike Scott announced

he’s retiring after two
terms in office.

Born in Powell River,
Gilmour, 57, is a graduate

Reform party in 1993 and
repeated that in 1997,

But Gilmour’s hopes to
be nominated again as a
Canadian Allianee candi-
date for the next federal
election were dashed when
a Nanaimo chiropractor
called James Lunney de-
feated him this past June.

Lunney, a member of
an evangelical church in
Nanaimo, “signed up his
whole church,” said Gil-
mour

He said his supporters,
thinking the nomination
was assured, didn’t attend
the meeting.

come that community’s re-
gional district director in
the 1999 local povernment
elections.

Mail-in ballots possible

THE NUMBER of candi-
dates for the Canadian Al-
liance Skeena riding no-
Mination has jumped to
three, says the party’s con-
stituency association pre-
sident.

And Lorne Sexton says
there are two other sets of
nomination papers still in
circulation.

As it is, Sexton’s happy -

“They’re two very real
credible candidates. Both
have a really good
presence,” he said.

Late last week, a third
candidate, Thornhill resi-
dent Ted Wyatt filed pa-
pers.

ling ballot box to visit the

major population centres

vered the nomination can
be done by mail-in ballots,
a system Sexton finds pre-
ferable.

“Otherwise we may not
have had people from
places such as Atlin vote
under the travelling ballot
box system,” he said.

“Many more people

will be able to take ad-

vantage of a mail-in ballot
and we want to be able to
include as many people as
possible.”

Sexton and other asso-
ciation executives are
meeting this week to con-
tinue their nomination bal-
lot planning.

They do have to apply
to their head office for ap-
proval to hold a mail-in
ballot but Sexton says that
won't be a problem.

than 600 members of the
Canadian Alliance in
Skeena and Sexton’s pre-
