Northerners fall behind in buckling up DRIVERS IN the northwest better buckle down if they want to catch up to the provincial average for buckling up. A survey conducted this summer by ICBC, indicates 68.4 per cent of drivers wear seatbelts in the northwest. - That’s lower than the provincial rate of 92 per cent. Terrace rated a little higher than the rest of the northwest at 77.4 per cent, thanks to the female population of avid seatbelt wearers. Males under 25 rated the worst at 64,1 per cent, “Women 50 years and over rated at 95.6 per cent com- pared to only 76.2 per cent for men of the same age. Summer students were stationed at intersections away from the main highways to monitor local traffic. They sur- veyed 1,619 cars on two different days between 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. and again between 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. “We wanted to determine what the wearing rate was in communities not normally involved in official surveys,”’ said ICBC public affairs spokesperson, Lynnette Piper. “Not 2 lot of people are wearing seatbelts in the north,” __ Part of the problem is that people feel there is little risk of ‘getting into an accident in smaller communities, she ex- plained. ICBC in conjunction with local RCMP ran a seatbelt safety campaign from October 4 to 8 to mark the 20th an- niversary of the seatbelt legislation. “Tn 1977 the overall wearing rate was 27 per cent ~~ It didn’t go up overnight and we’ve got a lot of work to do.” Failing to buckle up will land you a $75 fine, But taxi drivers driving below 7Okm/h within city limits and delivery people making frequent stops are exempt. ‘Even though they may be exempt on the books, its still a good idea to wear a scatbelt — they’re not exempt from an injury if involved in an accident.”’ Piper explained that ICBC is presently trying to remove this section from the Motor Vehicle Act. The Suzuki Sidekick soft top and the Jeep Grand Cherokee follow closely behind frequently stolen vehicles. That's according to a study by The Vehicle Information Centre of Canada’s survey of the frequency of insurance claims for 1995-96 models. As for pickup trucks, the Dodge Ram 1500 2WD, Dodge Dakota 4WD and Toyota 4WD pickup are ranked as the top three most frequently reported for theft. Two-door car models are also more likely to get stolen and the Honda Prelude rates the highest, followed by Acura Integra and Honda Civic, Terrace, like the rest of Bc. has a high rate of auto theft. To date, a total of 97 motor vehicles were reported stolen. B,C. averages about 42 vehicles stolen every day, that’s 34 per cent higher than the national provincial average. Terrace ICBC office manager, Paul McNicolis, says he’s not sure why B.C. has the highest rate of theft in the coun- try, but says that people in Terrace may be more trusting than people in the lower mainland. “One of our major issues in the last two years has been to get our theft problems under control,” said McNicolls. There has been a 100 per cent increase in auto theft in Terrace from 1995 to 96 but he hopes that this year won't have any dramatic increases. “There's a lot of joy-riding going on, but we're recover- ing most of the vehicles — in various degrees of dis- repair.” ‘What we’re doing is trying to raise public awareness — lock your car, don’t leave cameras or purses in the vehicle,”’ The most frequent place for reported stolen vehicles is right out of the driveway, between 1 and 5 a.m, But not to worry if you own an Oldsmobile Eighty Eight or Ford Crown Victoria, they seem to be the least tempting to thieves.
