Taking action to end violence By CAROL SABO Terrace Women’s Centre WHAT’S IN in a date? White ribbons and guns. Black eyes and faded yellow bruises, Nightmares and memories, Tears and loneli- ness. Seven years ago, on De- cember 6, 1989, one man walked into a post secondary institution class- roam in Montreal and shot and killed 14 young women, The first reaction to this story usually is ‘‘why?”’ Why? Because they were women. “Bul, ibat’s not a rea- son.” It’s funny for something with no reason to have such a result. Fourteen women — dead, Violence is that way. No reason, but such a result, The date, December 6, is The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence — Againsl Women, One day chosen to remember the 14 women who died on that date as well as the countless others who have died or suffered because of violence in their lives. One day chosen for action. Action to end the violence, To end the violence that happens jusl because women are women. We know violence against women is a fact. We know violence against women ex- ists and it devastates lives, Their lives, their families lives and their children’s lives. We know how many il touches - statistics upon stalistics have been pub- lished. We know it happens! Different ways bave been atiempted to make people aware — white ribbons, KATHY WESLEY, a coordinator at the Terrace Women's Resource Centre, decorates a t-shirt for the Clothesline Project. Around the city women gathered earlier this week to decorate the shirts which will be on display at the Skeena Mall on Dec. 6. The shirts symbolize wamen who've been victims of violence, sexual assault, abuse and lesbian bashing. campaigns — visual things to take the place of bruises, blood, broken Bones and hu- man lives. This year the women’s centre, along with the Safer Campuses Committee of NWCC, is sponsoring a dif- ferenl campaign to help bring awareness to the issue The Clothesline Project is intended to increase aware- ness of .the. impact of violence against women. It celebrates women's strength lo survive, and provides an avenue -to courageously break the silence. Women who have been victims of violence can decorate a shirt to hang on the clothesline — to express ize what they have [ell — to air sociely’s ‘dirty laundry.’ In public. Perhaps after the line is slrung, and people can sce whal women are ¢xperienc- ing, the community can help take it down. Action.
