Christmas seals boosted

The B.C. Lung Association has
started its. major annual drive to
raise money,

‘How women are portrayed on
television will be the focus this
week of two presentations of the
Terrace Women’s Resource
Centre.

SFU lecturer Lynne Hissey will
be ai the Jacal women’s centre at
7:30 p.m. Thursday to present
“‘Women and the Media’’. Using
examples from the news, talk
shows and music videos, she
shows how various forms of tele-
vision represent and construct
women in ways which reproduce

anid Music Videos: the Good, the
Bad and the Ambiguous’. The
presentation cxamines the
portrayal of women in music
videos — when they themselves
become performers and front-line
“musicians.

- Hissey is an ex-director of
Mediawatch, a national feminist
organization dealing with the role
of women in the media.

Elaine Johnson.

‘Terrace has always been gen-
erous,"’ said Johnson in announc-
ing a goal this year of $5,475.

That’s a five per cent increase
over What was donated last year.

The area contributed. $4,800 in
1990 and $5,200 last year.

The Terrace goal is part of a
province-wide goal of $1.5 mil-
lion.

‘Despite uncertain economic
times, we hope that people will
be. generous because the need is
great,” said Johnson, ‘“‘One in

five British Columbians’ suffer

from lung problems, but everyone
is affected.’

**The fact is, everyone pays for
lung disease in one way or anoth-
er — through personal suffering
or higher health care costs or

losses to the economy as wage-
camers become too ill to work.’’

“Changing that is a big job, and
your. Lung Association depends
entirely on help from individual
British = Columbians,’’ said
Johnson,

Christmas Seal gifts support ad-
vanced research conducted in
B.C., health educalion stressing
patient independence and in-
formation programs on air quality
issues.

The Christmas Seal campaign
runs through the end of January
and every household in the pro-
Vince receives a package of seals
anda reply card for donations.

Johnson said she hopes people
put the seals on all their mail —
even if they can’t afford to give
this year — as a sign of support
for the Lung Association.
