Skeena Valley offers several golf tourneys The Skeena Valley Golf and Country Club has numerous tour- naments for the avid male golfer this season, and from the looks of the surge in member- ships, they may have to toss in a few more to satisfy all the players. Pro-manager Dan Rosengren advises that Prince Rupert will host the first biggie of the year on the May 17 weekend. It’s their an- nual 54-hole Men’s Wrestlers return All-star Wrestling returns to this area in about a week's time as Prince Rupert, Terrace and Kitimat host one- night stands with several well known behemoths in the lineup. It starts at 8 p.m. each night. These grunt-and- groan artists are appear- ing at the Arena in Ter- race on May 22, Riverlodge at Kitimat on May 21 and the Civic Centre in Prince Rupert on May 20. One of the star attractions will be a special cage match each night. Several other local businesses and clubs will be holding small one-day tourneys throughout the summer, mostly’ in the Monday to Friday period. Rosengren reminds golfers that they must phone ahead to get reserved tee-off time, otherwise they could have a long wait at the clubhouse. He also advises that it’s much cheaper in the long run to purchase a season membership if you plan to play a lot of golf. He has all the infor- mation at the clubhouse. The juniors are being organized this year by Joanne Jones, the mother of four junior players who has lined up three regular tour- naments locally, plus a number of fun mini- tournaments, The major series in- clude the Skeena Valley Junior Open for boys and girls on the July 12 weekend, the Junior Club Championship on the August 10 weekend, and the Junior-Senior Pairs Tournament on the August 24 weekend. These tournaments are for golfers of all hand- dicaps because the youngsters play in flights against others with equivalent handicaps. To help beginners and high- handicapped juniors this year, Mrs. Jones has ar- ranged for several low- handicapped juniors and adults to offer free in- struction on Mondays after school. Among the fun mini- tournaments lineup are series called blind part- ners, bring-a-guest, long drive, a_ three-club tourney (meaning you can only use three dif- ferent clubs during the round), chipping con- tests, high and low hid- den holes, a round using driver and putter only, and many more. Prizes are being lined up for all these series as a stimulant to interest the juniors. Youngsters interested in playing should contact the golf course regarding fees and possible season memberships, or phone Mrs. Jones evenings at 635-2756.
