A research team at the
National Institutes of

’ Mental Health in Maryland

has developed a nasal spray
which improves memury.

The active ingredient is a
synthetic substance which
thas a sclose .chemical
yesemblance to arginine

- vasopressin, a hormone

produced in the brain to
regulate water retention.
Previously, other synthetic
cousins of the hormone have
been shown to have an ef:
fect on memory functions in
experimental animals.
Theresearch team, led by
Dr. Herbert Weingartner,
tested the spray on three
groups of volunteers:
normal college students, a
group of depressed patients
and a group of patients who.
had received electroshock.
In all cases, typical
“double blind” procedures
were followed so that
neither the participants nor
those directly in charge of
administering the ,..ex-
periment knew when. aéfive
ingredients were present in
the spray being tested.
While two groups of
patients showed the most
memory improvement,
without however any ac-
companying general im-
provement, the college
students also gained 20 per
cent in ability to remember
lists of words.
