STAMP CORNER— RIGHT ROYAL STAMPS British stamps are unique throughout the world — they need only show Britain's monarch to identify their country of origin. All ‘other countries have to print their names on their stamps. So British stamps offer a allery of royal portraits om the time of Queen Victoria when Britain in- troduced adhesive postage stamps to the world. This year Britain’s monarch wit be seen on a very special set of stamps — the ones marking the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne. Countries all over the world — including Canada — will be issuing stamps to mark the 25. years of the Queen’s reign. The British Post Office will be issuing its special stamps on May 11 — e time the Queen starts her ‘“walk-about”, visitin parts of the Unite Kingdom. . One other portrait of the Queen has appeared on British stamps — a side- - view photograph by Norman Parkinson was used on the two stamps issued to commemorate the Royal, Silver Wedding in 1972. Portraits of other British monarchs since stamps were first issued in Britain proveless fascinating, for in most cases only one portrait was used for stamps throughout each reign. The very first adhesive postage stamps in the world were issued by Britain in 1840 — they showed a por- trait of Queen Victoria taken from a medal engraved by William Wyon.and this portrait was used for all Stamp issues during Vic- TE toria’s reign. Again, Just one portrait was used for stamps issuded during the reign of Edward VIII. Two portraits of George V were used during his reign -- a three-quarter view was us on 44d and id stamps early in his reign and later a side- view was taken from a portrait on British coinage. Only four basic stamps were issued during the reign of Edward VIII showing one portrait — and in many ways these stamps resemble today’s British definitives in their sim- plicity of design. During- the reign of George VI one portrait was used on stamps — but with two variations. |The Coronation stamps of 1937 and the Royal Silver Wedding stamp of 1948 showed the King with his, Queen. ’ The only other British monarch to appear on a British stamp is Elizabeth 1. ‘In 1968 a series of stamps showing British paintings included a painting by an © unknown artist of Elizabeth 1 — this painting hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London: "A good spectator also creates.” Swiss Proverb Office will be releasing four N : new stamps which simply ‘B 125 Air Conditioned Suite & Rooms With View feature the portrait of the N Color TV, Telephone, Tub & Shower, Ele- 2 Queen together with the N vators, Coffae Shop, Dining Room, Nightly denomination.
