This brief is presented to the Port Coquitiam City Council on behalf of the Pocomo Boys' and Girls' Club and is a request for support by allowing us the use of a Port Coquitlam City owned building. This history of the Pocono Boys' and Girls' Club dates back to February 1973 and is a matter of record with the Port Coquitlam City Council. A brief review of events is as follows: February, 1973 - a group of citizens concerned with youth in this area began investigating community needs and services. May, 1973 - a Survey of youth needs and available resources was undertaken. Results indicated high use of existing programs; Cubs, Scouts, community recreation department, churches, etc., by a small percentage of the community's youth. A large number were uninvolved and were looking for non-league, diversified and self-initiated programs and it was our feeling that these needs could be best met through the establishment of a Boys' ard Girls’ Club in Port Coquitlam. February, 1974 - Pocomo Boys' and Girls' Club began operating through completely volunteer leadership under the auspices of Boys' Clubs of Canada out of Viscount Alexander Elementary School on Friday evenings. Membership ($1.00 per year) grew ina short time to over 200 boys and girls ranging in age from 8 ~- 18 in a short time and due to the excessive numbers attending, programs had to be cut off at that number. The club existed through the next 2 years in this facility but due to increased demand had to expand its services.
