The society, which provides tutors for peaple who need help reading and writing, recently lost its grant from the Northwest Community College. The college had given the society $16,000 for volunteer literacy training, workshops, and supplies. That money also helped pay the rent for an office on Lakelse. Although the society had a bit of moncy banked, it would have been homeless in a few manths. Bul the K’San House Society agreed to adopt the literacy society. The K’San Saciety bas offered Skeena Leaming Connection a room in their offices on Lazelle, above the employment centre. The literacy society will be moving in Feb, 1. deal,’’ he added, laughing. However, Brian Loptson, education and student services director at the college, said the college was not cutting funding to literacy programs, Instead it is looking for a new partner to work with. In the meantime the college is working with the Volunteer Bureau on a Community Readers and Writers project which offers help with reading and writing.
