‘Good form and good weather marked the Skeena Valley Golf Club’s annual men’s open tournament on the Canada Day weekend. Smithers pro-manager John Morgan came out 20 strokes ahead of the field. Smithers’ club at Skeena open - Smithers Golf Club pro- manager John Morgan found the Skeena Valley Golf Club to his liking on Canada Day week- ‘end at the annual 54-hole Skeena Valley Men’s Open golf cham- pionship. Morgan enjoyed it so much that he turned in the best overall low gross score of 212, and it was 20 strokes better than- runnerup Helgi Helgerson, also of Smithers. Morgan, shooting to a scratch handicap, fired rounds of 68, 71 and 73. The overall low. net went to Skeena Valley’s Jim Rigler with a 209. Helgerson had to settle for . low gross in the championship flight with his 232. He finished- three strokes up on Terrace veteran John Yasinchuk and five ahead of Smithers’ Steve Ker- brat. On the net side of the cham- - pionship flight, Cam Muirhead of Kitimat shot 214, followed by two players from the host club — Frank Malenfant (216) and Mickey Johnson (218). First flight honors in gross went to Terrace’s Phil Davies with a 246. Smithers’ Gene Ker- brat was next at 252, followed pro top by Rick Letawski of Terrace with 254. Tops in net were Scot- ty Morrison (217) and Ron Macaulay (218), both of. Kitimat, and Ron Marleau (222). of Terrace. Ken Feddersen's 263 won sec- ond flight gross. Next behind the Terrace golfer were two club- mates, Darcy Delorme (266) and } - _ Dick Graf (268). Lloyd Rad-. ford, out of Australia, took the net with 212, Prince Rupert’s Cliff Fregin was runnerup at 218, followed by hometowner Dave Comfort with 220. ’ For the third flight, Fred Lewis shot a 274 for gross honors. Another Terrace player — Frank Hamilton — was run- nerup at 277. Leo Lemay made it a complete local trio with a 283. Kitimat’s Ray Crawford took net honors with 214. Kai Chueden of Terrace was next at 220, followed by clubmate Brian McIntyre at 222. It was a huge turnout for the series, Well over 100 signed up, but only 100 actually played. There was a large out-of-town contingent, including 17 from Kitimat, 10 from Smithers and | seven from Prince Rupert. ‘Good weather for Canada Day tennis - Most of the top tennis players in the area turned out on Canada Day weekend ‘for Kitimat’s tournamient, and they had good weather for the three- day series at Mount Elizabeth school.
