~ APRIL, 1970 THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER 11 APRIL 4 IN MEMORIAL ARENA LOCAL 1-423 HOLDS eel KELOWNA MEET Local 1-423 IWA held its 25th Annual Meeting April 4, in the Memorial Arena, Kel- owna, attended by approxj- mately sixty delegates and a number of guests. Business of the meeting in- eluded approving the Officers’ Report, adopting six by-law changes recommended by the Local Executive Board, and electing two delegates to the NDP Convention to be held June 5-6-7 in Chilliwack. Delegates elected were Lo- cal President Bill Schumaker and Bill Oner. Guest speakers at the meet- ing were International Presi- dent Ron Roley, Regional President Jack Moore, and Regional 2nd Vice-President Wyman Trineer. Roley in his address stated that labour was dealing with a much tougher group of em- ployers than in the past. The giants of the industry were buying out their smaller com- petitors and banding together to hold the line on labour costs, He warned the delegates that it was up to the working people to fight to protect the natural resources of the coun- try which provided their live- lihood and only in this way could they ensure getting a fair share of the wealth pro- duced. Moore assured the delegates in his address that the present soft market in lumber was only temporary and all signs pointed to a quick upswing. He listed the number of areas in the province where new sawmills, plywood plants and pulp mills were under con- struction or on the drawing boards. These companies, he stated, were not investing millions of dollars in the forest industry for nothing. They know full well that there is a vital need for lumber and that the mar- ket is bound to skyrocket, he said. He then gave the delegates a brief review of events lead- ing up to the Wall Street CANADIAN JOBLESS AT CRITICAL STAGE—CLC Unemployment is at a criti- eal stage and will become still worse if the federal govern- ment continues to pursue its present policies, Donald Mac- Donald, president of the Ca- nadian Labour Congress said. Time for Action “The figures just released by the government, showing 526,000 Canadians out of work, prove conclusively that this is now the top priority economie problem facing Can- ada”, Mr. MacDonald said. “The rise to 6.5 per cent, from 6.1 per cent a year earlier, is alarming. The methods being used by the government to combat inflation mean the pursuit of policies which will make the situation still worse. The time for action is now. Suffering and hardships are being imposed on people at the bottom of the economic seale who are not responsible for inflation and who are the victims of present government policies. “The situation is actually considerably worse than is re- vealed by the figures. Because of the nature of today’s work foree, including a high per- centage of women, many peo- ple who find it difficult to ob- tain work withdraw, tempo- rarily at least, from the work force and delay seeking jobs which they know are not there. HA Training Programs “In addition there are the people engaged in training programs. These are not in- cluded in the figures. The situ- ation will be still further com- plicated when thousands of young people now in schools, colleges and universities enter the labour force within a mat- ter of little more than weeks. These are all hidden factors not included in the published figures. “The report made public to- day must surely make it clear, that, in the interests of the Canadian people, all efforts should be directed to avoiding a further slowing down of the country’s economy.” EEE ES) LIGHTER SIDE Kamloops Katie says she knows a girl who is so skinny that when she swallowed an olive her boy friend left town. * * * Marriage statistics show that the general run of bach- elors apparently is too slow. x * A Vancouver machinery dealer tells us that he ex- pects to get rich — they’ve discovered parking space on his property.
