But he completely fails to draw the obvious conclusions. “The United States cannot afford another decline like 'that which has characterized the past decade and a half,” he says. : “We are not omnipotent. We are no longer invulnerable ... only self-delusion can keep us from admitting our decline to ourselves,” he writes, with much more to the same effect. Then. comes the. touch of the cold-war fanatic who refuses to recognize that a. fundamen- tal.change is essential. For, despite the great de- cline in America’s standing, “‘it ‘is futile now. to debate the causes of this state of affairs,” he says. “What is needed even more than different policies is a dif- ferent style and a more dyna- mic attitude.” In other words, the mixture as before only more of it and dressed up differently. And he gives us this with a vengeance. One of those nightmare-like arguments is going -on in the United States. Should H-bombs be used primarily to destroy military centres— wiping out civilians as a secondary by- product, or should they be fir- ed at civilian centres—and de- stroy military targets as a by- product? Prof. Kissinger gives pages to this ghastly ‘argument which amounts to suicide whichever view is taken. But, after show- ing there are dangers, he calls for a big increase in conven- tional forces—meaning - more men in uniform for Nato. Far from a reduction in nuclear weapons he wants more of them, to and some form of confedera- tion for the North Atlantic group of nations—a kind of super Common Market. This would in fact bring America into a military, political and economic organisation in which Britain and other sec- ond-class Powers would lose their sovereignty. é — Br. They are being made in Europe and. in Hollywood by movie-makers of various na- tionalities, not a few of them of strong anti-Nazi and anti- fascist principles. Some are fiction films. Others are in the form of documentaries. Both types of films are utilizing ma- terial found in the archives of World War Two. Included are newsreels and documentaries shot by the Nazis themselves. First and foremost is the powerful Swedish anti-Hitler film “Mein Kamf,” released in the U.S. by Columbia pictures. “Mein Kamft”’ had a vast au- dience in Europe where it il- Iuminated for the masses of youth in particular the horrors and the lessons of the Hitler era. In Israel at this moment is Erwin Leiser, the Swedish pro- ducer-director of “Mein Kamf.” His purpose in being there is to put the finishing touches to his new full-length documen- tary movie about Eichmann. It should be ready for viewing by summer time. Its maker describes his Eichmann film “authentic document” “original footage as an containing WORTH READING The Cuban Revolution by Blas Roca, $1.50. It has a few good things in it, in- | cluding a shot of Eichmann (a portrayal) boasting that the Nazi movement was gaining ground in country after coun- try and would continue to ad- vance éven if he were hanged. It is noteworthy that “Cpera- tion Eichmann’’ was banned in West Germany. The Fitm Cen- sors called_it ‘a false simplifi- cation of the Nazi era.” As though it. were . possible for anyone to over-simplify the monstrous crimes committed by Hitler and Eichmann. What can be anticipated of the major anti-Nazi films of our time is “Judgement at Nuremberg,” a dramatization of the War Crimes Trials, now being made abroad by Holly- wood producer-director. Stan- ley Kramer. Kramer’s name for some years, has been con- nected with a large group of meritorious and. thought-pro- voking films such as “The Defiant Ones,” against racism, “On the Beach,” against atom- ic war, and “Inherit the Wind”, al Spurs Cycle for the right to teach scientif- ic truth. “Judgement at Nur- emberg” is already being ad- vertised as ‘set to openvall 4 world in Decem- around the ber of this year.
