The City of Port Coquitlam WI siwhs| [ MEMORANDUM MAY 1 7 1993 TO: B. Kirk DATE: May 12, 1993 City Administrator FROM: J. Maitland, City Treasurer - , panty Rise WITHDRAWN SUBJECT: Funding for additional budget requests RECOMMENDATION: That Council consider the attached list of items for funding. BACKGROUND & COMMENTS: I have been asked in advist: Council on where they could find funds to enable skateboarding to take place. A request for additional funding was also received from the Chamber of Commerce to increase support for tourism promotion, both Coquitlam and Port Moody have agreed to increase funding. Included in our budget is the amount of $225,000 set aside for a contingency which was mainly to cover the cost of the anticipated settlement of our fire fighters contract as well as any other unforeseen item which could arise during the year. Last week, the arbitrator between the City of Vancouver and Vancouver fire fighters issued binding recommendations on wages for the years 1992, 1993 and 1994. Settlement with the fire fighters will result in roughly $193,000 of the contingency being spent. I would not have any great concem if Council were to allocate say $10,000 to $12,000 of the remaining unallocated amount in the contingency account. During our 1993 budget discussions, Council considered and rejected a long list (attached, now amended to include skateboarding and the request from the Chamber of Commerce) of requests for additional funding. Council should not deal with any request in isolation, prior to the reallocation of funding for any item, Council should weigh the options, ie is it the most important item on the list? , Maitland, City Treasurer - Deputy Administrator
