Improving habitat is one of the best ways to ensure our wildlife will be around in the year 2000. Register as a Habitat 2000 Class today and launch a Habitat 2000 Project. We know you are busy. That’s why we created this ready-to-use Habitat 20CG kit of suggested improvement projects. Students will ear how to: © create a schoolyard mini-refuge ® build simple nesting structures ® improve shelter and food for wildlife ® make winter feeders * fix wetland borders ® co-operate in community projects ...and so much more! These projects are a powerful way to teach your students about their responsibilities toward wildlife and its habitat. Register Your Habitat 2000 Ciass...Apply for Funds Up te $200.06 We know habitat improvements cost money. Environment Canada, Wildlife Habitat Canada and the Canadian Wildlife Federation have created a Habitat 2000 Fund ta help finance projects Canada-wide so that as many youngsters as possible may become involved in instructive “hands-on” wildlife habitat learning experiences that could last a lifetime. Apply for $25.00, $50.00 or $75.00 for small projects or up to $200.00 for more ambitious efforts. Whe and What Is Eligible for Funding? e Any class — from kindergarten through to high school — is eligible. ; e Funds are available only for equipment, supplies and materials needed to carry out Habitat 2000 Projects (for example, lumber, garbage bags, plants, trees, tools, hardware, seeds, signage, etc.). * All funded Habitat 2000 Projects must be supervised by a teacher. Hew to Apply for Funds e Use the enclosed Habitat 2000 Application and Registration Form. © Students or teachers may apply for funds. Applications must be accompanied by signed letters on school letterhead from supervising teachers verifying their supervision. © Habitat 2000 cheques will be payable only to supervising teachers. Follow-up photos and/or descriptions of projects supported by funds will be required. Peadlines, Deadlines, Deadiines...April 20th and September 30th You or your students may apply for funds this spring! Apply by April 20, 1989 for funds for your Spring ‘89 Habitat 2000 Projects. Do you wish to launch a Habitat 200C Project next year? The Habitat 2000 program will be in effect until June 1990. Applications for funds for the 1989-90 academic year must be sent by September 30, 1989. The earlier you apply, the better chance you have for financial assistance because funding is limited. * We encourage students to draw on local expertise for assistance with their projects. Local conservation groups like fish and game organizations and naturalist groups may be contacted. Additional Assistance If you're planning a project that may need more than $200.00, check with your district wildlife department about assistance available to residents in your province or territory. (Consult the booklet back for addresses in your area.) In Ontario, for example, funding is offered through the Community Wildlife Improvement Program (CWIP). In Alberta, the Buck for Wildlife program is available for Albertans. Don’t Delay...Register Today Your class doesn’t need funds but wants to register its Habitat 2000 Project? Great! We feel that youngsters all across Canada can improve 200,000 square metres of habitat for wildlife by June 1990. The Canadian Wildlife Federation will be tallying totals so be sure that yours is included. Use the enclosed registration form and be counted for wildlife. Awards, Awards, Awards We thank the hundreds of teachers who participated in last year’s Wildlife Week Awards Program. Entries for ‘89 Awards may be made in the following categories: posters; pictures; essays; booklets; photo descriptions or videos of displays or events or projects; descriptions of wildlife-related science-fair projects or other similar projects. Individual students or entire classes are eligible for the Wildlife Week Annual Awards Program. All Habitat 2000 funded projects will automatically be included in this program. Entries must be related to the 1989 National Wildlife Week theme, “Habitat 2000: Act today for wildlife in the year 2000". Include names, ages and grades of your students, teacher's and principal's name, school name, address, postal code and telephone number with each entry. Send entries as soon as possible to your provincial or territorial government wildlife department. (Addresses are listed on the back cover of the booklet. Ontario teachers, send your entries directly to the Canadian Wildlife Federation.)
