Crossings on Hastings Street - - Works and: Services Committee, January 8th, 1985 RECOMMENDATION: That the Westwood Home and School Association. be permitted to erect and remove plywood silhouettes of school children at two points along Hastings Street during schaol hours, namely at Kitchener Avenue and Patricia Avenue in accordance ‘with the attached letters; And that the City install crosswalks at the two abave iocations in order to concentrate the crossing of students ar these two points; And that the City assist with the ‘construction of the plywood silhouettes by donating the plywood and reflective material. BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS: The Works: and Services Committee has heard several delegations regarding the. safety problem for school children on Hastings Street. These delegations made’ a number’ of requests, some of which fall within the normal maintenance program of the City and will be taken care of. Some of the requests were with regard to preventing the use of Hastings Street as a short-cut for non=area residents, As a result of an earlier complaint:in this area, the R.C.M.P. have kept records showing that, the majority of traffic violators are local area residents. As indicatad in the attached letter from the Westwood Home and School Association, the Association recognizes the local problem and intends to complete an intensive campaign to raise public awareness. to the traffic problems. Distriét in New Westminster. . The residents and tne school have agreed to be responsible for constructing, installing and removing. the signs before and after’ the school day.
