August 30th, 1976 AND THAT a letter be sent to the Provincial Government advising of this Council's support in that regard, Tabled. A discussion ensued, and Alderman Mabbett stated he did not see anything wrong with the District of Burnaby initiating such a resolution; however, Alderman Keryluk commented on the dissatisfaction within the Fire Department of the District of Burnaby following the employment of an 'imported' person to fill the Fire Chief's position, rather than elevate one of the existing members as is the usual procedure, and he stated he hoped this would not become a commonplace practice throughout the Province. Alderman Mabbett stated he did not feel this Council should be allowed to discuss Burnaby's hiring policies; also, that he was in favour of the resolution as he felt a Fire Fighters' College is needed. Alderman Laking stated he agreed with Alderman Mabbett's view that Burnaby's hiring policies should not be discussed by this Council, and that while he was in favour of the establishment of a Fire Fighters' College, particularly to standardize the system of training throughout the Province, the cost of such a facility will probably be a municipal one, therefore he suggested more information should be obtained in that it will accommodate, ete. Alderman Traboulay stated he did not fael the resolution should be supported by this Council until the questions raised by Alderman Laking were answered and that he also agreed with the views of Aldermen Mabbett and Laking on the issue of Burnaby's hiring policies. Moved by Alderman Traboulay: Seconded by Alderman Laking: That the foregoing motion to endorse the resolution of the District of Burnaby as stated in its letter dated August 13th, 1976 recommending the establishment of a Provincial Fire Fighters’ College, be tabled and referred to the Building and Protection Committee for further information as to costs, location, etc., of such a facility; also input from the City's Fire Chief, Carried.
