THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAN PARKs a REcREATIQN CQNNITTEE meeting of the Parks & Recreation Committee was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday, January 16th, 1985, at 4:15 A P 111 In attendance were Alderman Michael Wright and Alderman George Laking. Also in attendance were K. Janna Taylor, Parks & Recreation Director; Bryan Kirk, City Administrator; Beulah Paugh and Gloria Azzi from Coquitlam Area Fine Arts Council. ~IRMATION EQNUTES ~ That the minutes of the meeting of the Parks a Recreation Committee held on Wednesday, December 19th, 1984, be taken as read and adopted. ~ cultural centre District The representatives from the Pine Arts Council presented their brief for a regional cultural centre. Much discussion from the Committee members ensued with regard to whether we should be having a regional cultural centre or a community cultural centre. It was suggested that a meeting of the Parks a Recreation Director/staff representatives and the Council member responsible for parks a Recreation in the various areas should be invited to attend a meeting. The purpose of such a meeting would be to review the report and to make a joint recommendation for the various Councils to consider. Janna Taylor will coordinate the meeting and invite staff and political representatives from the City of Port Moody, the District of Coquitlam, Belcarra and Electoral Area 'B'. The representatives from the Pine Arts Council were most pleased with this solution and they also will be invited to attend the meeting. lEEN gg ]„ Recommendation: That the Parks 4 Recreation Director coordinate the meeting for representatives from Port Moody, Coquitlam, Belcarra and Electoral Area 'B'. ~ ~ ChRRXEll Recoanition The Committee reviewed the letter submitted to us by the Amateur Athletic Association on behalf of Port Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association in which they ask for civic recognition for Shaughnessy Motors, Division 5 Team, who won a silver medal at the Provincial 'A'hampionships and the Eaton a starr Team who won gold medals at the provincial 2. B'hampionships. lLFJK JAN Continued f6 5 Recommendation That civic recognition be given to the Provincial silver medalists, Shaughnessy Motors and Eaton S Starr gold medalists at the Provincial 'B'nampionships. 'A'hampions CARRIED also received from the Senior Secondary School for three athletesnominations who had placed at the Provincial Secondary School Swimming Championships at U.B.C. in November, 1984, for civic recognitio&i. We Recommendation That Ken Stutt, who placed first in the 100 metre Butterfly and second in the 100 metre and Alex Stuit, who placed second in the 5S metreFreestyle Breastroke and to Monica Swensson, who placed second in the 100. metre Individual Medley receive civic recognition. Attached isthat the criteria for civic We recognition. ~e Mg g Provincial ~ )Lincette Chamcionshios The Port Coquitlam Ringette Association has applied for the Provincial 'B'hampionships, March 22nd to 24th be held in Port Coquitlam. They have asked for all of theto facilities in both arenas, as well as the ice. Recommendation a) b) That the Ringette Association be permitted to hold the 1985 Provincial 'B'hampionships March 22nd to March 24th, 1985, at Port Coquitlam Recreation Centre. That the ice time be charged as in previous years at 50% of'he rental. c) That the City operate the concession as in past years. d) That the other room facilities be given free of charge. CARRIED Historically we have shared the ice costs for such championships. Alderman Laking did not vote as he felt that he was in conflict of interest position. JAPAN 16 5 ~ iig + Budaet Meetincs Budget meetings have been set for the Parks a Recreation Committee. The Capital Budget upwill be discussed January 30th meeting and the Operation Budget willat bethe discussed at the February 6th meeting. The Highland Dancing people have indicated that they do not wish to move from Saturday to Sunday and, therefore, will not be participating in this year's May Day. should be noted that in previous years they did operate on ItSundays and in the 1984 May Day they were moved back to Saturday and they have chosen not to move back to Sunday. 1jJHk Bg 0, ldHIHI Fraser Vallev Commissioners Association HIRER It was brought to the attention of the that this group hosts various seminars throughout Committee the year the evening for park commissioners and politicians on invarious subjects relevant to Parks a Recreation. The City of Port Coquitlam has been asked to host the one in March on future trends. Hosting such a seminar would mean that the Parks s Recreation Department would be responsible for organizing a dinner and speaker. However, the cost of the dinner and speaker would be covered by a charge to each participant attending the seminar. The Committee decided, at this time, that we would not be prepared to host anything in March. However, we should indicate that we would be prepared to look at hosting something in the Fall of this year. Recommendation: That we do not host a March session; however, indicate we would be interested in hosting a session in the that Fall. CARRIED ADJOURNMENT The meet& rned at 5:45 p.m. M.R.
