Seniors celebrate | centre anniversary By BEVERLEY GREENING LOCAL SENIORS last week celebrated 14 years together at the Happy Gang Centre. The 90-strong local of the B.C, Old Age Pensioners Organization gathered on Tuesday, September 13 for a 14th anniversary dinner of the 1980 ribbon cutting that of- ficially opened the ceatre, Plans first began in April 1978 to participate in a project for a drop-in centré for senior citizens of Terrace, The City of Terrace agreed to give a 99-year lease for the prop- erty and ihe members began the task of raising money for the building. Through bake sales, flea markets, garage sales, conces- sions, raffles, bazaars, much of ihe moncy was realized. Ticalment of draining wound, burns, ostomy care; mastectomy, cardia surgery, planned maternily discharge. b)Persons who require nursing care to avoid hospital admission. This also includes. persons who wish to dic at home. c.g. Teach- ing and emotional support for a diabetic, dressing changes for a young child who has a bum as well as teaching of care to parents and assessment of safely in the home. c)Persons who require nursing care to prevent the social or func- tional deterioration that would lead to fulure admission to an acule carc hospital or long term care facility, ¢.g, Assistance with medication, treatment of bowel/bladder problems, the con- fused elderly. Palliative care is also an arca of concern for Community Home Care Nursing Service the goal is to enhance comfort, dignity, and quality of life and ta relieve/climinate/control symp- toms. In just over two years, the Happy Gang Centre was built and was in operation. Gladys, Oliver, president at the time, remembers the opening day, which was well attended by the public. The ribbon cutting: was per- formed by May Cole, the oldest senior there. The kitchen was not organized as it is today. The women took turns bringing in soup, sand- . wiches and dessert for lunches to sell. One unfortunate lady had to brake the car suddenly on her way to the centre wilh lunches, A mixture of lemon pic and soup decorated the interior of the car and the passengers. The Happy Gang Centre con- tinues as a drop-in centre for seniors with many programs un- der way — bingos, cards, carpet bowling, floor curling, quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, Trips, potluck suppers, pancake breakfasts and dinners are organized and the lunch is served Monday to Friday prepared by BCOAPOG volunteers in the recently renovated kitchen.
