CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD ~The Mail Bag Apartheid is here and so is racism Dear Sir: Frequent letter writer Bill Hom- burg undoubiedly has a few con- cerns about the implication of self government and its potential af- fect on non-native people. While it is casy to understand his concem regarding racism and ‘injustice, what Mr. Homburg neglected to point out is that we already have an apartheid system in Canada today. Most of vs who are native would agree that the Indian Act is a piece of legislation that asserts control over. every. aspect of our lives. The Indian Act’s (which is far more advanced that of South Africa) sole purpose is to destroy the native way: of lifé and to as- similate them into the mainstream society without arousing interna- tional protest. "Yes, Mr. Homburg, ihe Indian ’ Act is so perfect a piece of legis- lation that even the majority of natives today are” blinded by its real intention, I bet you didn’t even know that the present South African policies regarding the Blacks and their homelands is based on the Canadian system of Indian reservations. You called us thieves and bums, Mr. Homburg. But don’t you forget what your government and your ancestors have done to my people. Was it out of love that your government and churches put generations upon generations of my relations into residential schools and boarding schools? So that the majority of them could leam about sexual, physical and mental abuse from pricsts, nuns and ex-servicemen, “Yes, Mr. Homburg, we do live in a racist society alright. So racist that even the law of the land abuses our people in small communities throughout Canada. These are not statements but facts. , Perhaps, a well known native Choice. liked . Dear Sir: Contrary to the atticte in the Qet!.6 edition of your paper, about an NDP - Reform deadlock, there is a viable alternative for the . voters in the Skeena riding, As a. former NDP sup- _ porter, I no longer believe they are the best ones. for. me. I. will certainly not vote for the Reform party as I am - very concerned, about our natural resources and 1 do believe they-are concerned ;,with -industry without any care for our environment... Dear Sir: Who is this guy? ‘Chairman Mel” Hurtig and this so-called ' National party seems to think mile high tariff wails, severe cur- rency exchange controls, “Made in Canada’’ interest rates and the cancellation of trade agreements will-lead Canada down the new and improved yellow brick road. Not content to earn his spurs by building a political party based on membership: and _ popularity, Chairman Mel wants to leap frog ahead of the pack by pulling a “Wilson.” politician was right when he said that natives should have killed the first Europeans who intruded on our shores. Then we wouldn’t have to listen to bigots like you whose ancestors belicved the world was flat. Until you can recognize thut we are nations everyway different as a Cree is from a Nisga’a, like an Englishman from a German, there will always be racism and in- justice, As a great man said, **The great appears great only be- cause we are on our kuces, let us risel”’ Mr. Homburg, you can call our people anything you want, the truth won't change a thing. If you want justice, Mr. Homburg, go home! Go back across the sea and take your political sysicm, language, and culture and stop forcing them upon my people. ‘William Burgess, Terrace, B.C. New party head gets an earful on your back, Mel. Next to Maude Barlow, - Met Hurtig has to be the biggest eco- = nomic nationalist in our midst today. It must be disappointing to fall off the federal gravy train, Mel. Your publishing conipany sunk pretty fast after the Trudeau candy ended. Your views are so simplistic I’m not surprised your party is polling 1 per cent in the national survey. Take some advice from some- one who supports exports and in- Aemational trade.
