Misleading information The pregnancy prevention pamphlets advertised and dis-. tributed widely throughout B.C. as part of the Strengthening the. - Family program are inaccurate . and could lead to more un-— wanted pregnancies, according to a number of health profes- sionals and women’ s “organ izations. The Vancouver Women’ $- Health Collective wants the: pamphlets recalled to correct the faulty information they contain. ,- Dr. Lani ‘Almas of the Emerson — Clinic in Terrace also examined the pamphlets and found a num- ber of problems, -“] find it strange that con: doms, spermicides and fertility - awareness were mentioned first when these are some of the least effective methods,’’ she said.. ““And the condom is not 90.to 98 ‘percent effective, as the pam- _ phiet states. At worst they're 60 percent effective, at best 96 per- cent: Tliere can also be problems» with using them properly, with them breaking or having micro- tears you can’t see.’ She explained that effective- ness rates are based on the num- ber of pregnancies occuring in one year in 100 women using the method. Compared to a 1985" Health:and Welfare Canada re- port, many of the effectiveness rates given in the pamphlets are misleadingly high. ‘‘Spermicide ‘is not that good, with 4 to 36 pregnancies among 100 women in one year. Its effectiveness is ‘not 70 to 75 percent, it’s-more _ like 64 percent. And the pam- ' phiets don’t mention the fact that many of these methods can. or should be used together.” ‘Fertility ‘awareness wasn't. assigned an effectiveness rate in the pamphlet, but this method - can lead to 1 to 47 pregnancies - among. 100 women using it for one year. “‘Only very motivated people should use this method,”’ Almas said. “The IUD can be . good, but it’s not appropriate for teenagers. The. pill is very effective, with only one or two . pregnancies a year, but. “it is ex-:> ‘tremely expensive. I give out my free samples-to those who can’t afford them, but it’s hard to supply half of Terrace. And‘ a woman over 40, no matter how healthy she is, should not use the. pill. So then she has all the prob- lems: associated with the other Terrace Review — Wednesday, May 11, 1988 17 _ Pregnancy: prevention pamphlets. may backfire methods and the possibility of a menopausal pregnancy.’ * The cervical cap is mentioned in the pamphlets, but only a ‘handful of doctors, mainly in the Vancouver area, have them imported from England. ‘‘Cer- vical caps still are made in only three sizes, but ‘cervixes don’t come in only three sizes. There’s a 50 per cent attrition rate in women using them.” she said. Finally, the ‘‘methods” of withdrawal or breastfeeding, characterized in a pamphlet with the line ‘These ways don’t work very well’ are not birth control methods at all. ‘Some people still believe these fallacies. It should say, ‘Do not use’ as a method of birth control.” ‘*There is no safe, 100 percent effective, cheap birth control method. I wish it were as easy to - prevent pregnancy as Bill Van- der Zalm thinks,’ she com- mented. - Dr. Almas hopes the Family Life Program in the schools will help young people learn about their bodies, ‘‘the only machine we get to use without an oper- ator’s manual’’, but thinks this education should start in kinder- garten, She said her office will - use the pamphlets, but it will take quite an effort to point out and correct the inaccuracies they - contain. Carol Sabos, regional repre- sentative for the National Ac- tion Committee on the Status of Women, questions the B.C. gov- ernment’s ability and authority to set themselves up as providers of ‘reliable’ birth control infor- mation.
